I've never heard of a do it yourself fix for the scanner chip. So I wouldn't try it... when I was looking into it, all the guides said it was the same as rroding... and it's not... and they asked for money... so for that reason alone I didn't bother with it. Unless you can get your hands on a scanner chip and install it I'm not sure what good taking apart your console would do- unless guides are wrong and that's not it...
Best bet is just sending it in and paying the $150 for an arcade in the meantime if you can...
If I remember right, you wouldn't be replacing the chip itself, just removing it, cleaning it off, and putting down new silicon and putting the chip back plus all the other steps involved in the repair. Most of the parts you could pick up at any Lowe's or Home Depot. Some you'd have to order online but I don't recall what it was. I haven't seen any stats on the success/failure rate of this but it would also depend on who is doing the repairs or not. Obviously someone with no experience in this would have a less likelihood of success. If you google it I'm sure you'll find plenty of step by step instructions with pictures if you're curious as to how it's done. If I run across the link on the one I thought about using, I'll share it with the group. This repair is more for the guys that know a thing or two about electronics and repairs and have some free time on their hands.
