Damn Lou, good luck. I've had some kind of electric therapy but I can't remember what it was called, but I know it hurt like hell.

good luck lou. you have every right to be nervous, especially since its your back. most people are nervous when its there, or near there for that matter.

I will be having spine surgery on the 24th of this month. I'm super nervous about this one. It's not a regular surgery either. I'm having Lumbar herniated disc surgery/spine surgery. It's basically my Sciatic Nerve is getting pinched from my two herniated disks I have. I've been having back and leg problems for the past year. It's so damaged that I'm going to have permanent nerve damage for the rest of my life and I'm probably going to be limping for the rest of my life as well.
What they're going to do is begin stripping the muscle off of the back over the area of the disc rupture. Than they're going to remove a small window of bones, moving the nerves, and removing the ruptured discs that I have. I have pain starting from my left buttock area, all the way down to my heel. I've been on a cane for the past year and It's not getting any better. I regret pushing the surgery so far back, but the spine is such a sensitive area that I just wanted to suck it up and wait to see if goes away on it's own.
I've done so may procedures. I've done acupuncture, physical therapy, epidurals, and I've also had two EMG's. The EMG is the most painful thing I've ever been through. It involves testing the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. Basically, they stick you from your back all the way down your leg and foot and send electrical current through your body. It's so painful.
Maybe I'm just being a pussy, but I'm so nervous. If they fuck up, I can be paralyzed for life and there's nothing I can do about it. Some people don't know this, but you can not sue the military once you're on active duty. So I'm basically fucked. I just wanted to know if any of you guys ever had surgery and whether or not you had complications afterwards.

I've had 5 or 6, I've lost count. I shattered my right elbow, tore my miniscus in my knee, was born with a brain tumor, had my tonsils out, and a deviated septum fixed in my nose.
I will pray that your surgery goes well, back surgery is very serious. If your surgeon is good you will be okay. I was nervous before every surgery, so it is common.

Wow, Lou! First off, while you can't sue the army, your dependants and family can. Also, you could sue the Dr. personally if it's something he could have avoided.
I've had surgery... umm... I've had a lot of them actually. Never on my spine though. I was born with a club foot, so I had 2 surgeries by the time I was 2 years old... I'm due- OVERdue for another, but I haven't had a time that I wouldn't need to walk or drive for 3 months that I could do it XP
I totally sympathize, you have a right to be worried about it, it's major surgery, and anytime your spine is involved, it's scary. But at least you'll be unconscious! I'm with Noah... I'll be praying for you! You're going to make it through this a bigger, badder, MUCH SEXIER Lou! (Chicks dig guys with scars!)
As much crap as I shovel out about military doctors, their job is to keep you battle ready... They'll do it. So what's your prognosis, after the surgery? Are you going to be profiled or a medical discharge?

My 1sgt told me that he's going to send me to a med board to get me evaluated. I'm not trying to get out, but it doesn't look good for me. I'm going to be out of work for about 2 months. 2 months of laying in bed and playing xbox. I'm going to be in the hospital anywhere between 3-5 days. I'm going to be pretty much by myself in the hospital, since I no longer have a wife.
Damn that sucks Lou. Dont worry your not a pussy for big worried. Hell Id be scared shitless if they were going to perform surgery anywhere near my back.
If i knew where the hospital was i would send u a card. Best wishes and i hope the operation goes well.

I've only had "minor" surgeries/procedures, but many of my family members have had major surgeries and you have to remember the doctors have to spell out any small chance at all of there being a complication or they will be sued. Like Raine said, their job is to get you healthy and I'm sure the last thing they want is to know they paralyzed someone due to their mistake. Even for my kidney stone procedure (not a surgery but still really not fun) they had to warn me that because I was going under anesthetics that there was a chance I wouldn't wake up. I've been under anesthetics 6 or 7 times in my life and never had a problem, in fact they don't work on me very well, I usually have to get a double dose for a person my weight because my body metabolizes the crap so quick (too bad I can't metabolize the fat that awesomely), yet EVERY stinking time I go in they tell me I could die. I know yours is more complicated than any surgery I've had Lou but I'm confident you will come out of it just fine!
ditto on that one for sure. I will definitely pray for you as well.
Good Luck Lou!
