A few months ago, posts about the EA\'s Monopoly and Scrabble press releases that fueled rumors of an Xbox Live Arcade game in the works for both of those titles. Well, earlier this morning, EA and Hasbro announced that MONOPOLY would be headed to all gaming platforms including the Xbox 360, but probably not how we all expected.

MONOPOLY the video game, inspired by the MONOPOLY HERE & NOW World Edition board game (credit cards, skyscrapers, cell phones as game pieces, etc), is set for release sometime this Fall and is one of those games that would be suited perfectly for the XBLA. But after reading the press release, that impression was soon squashed!

The game will in fact be a retail (and full priced) release. EA has plans to deviate slightly from the current \"Here & Now\" edition of the game by adding a \"party twist\" to the game. The twist will feature four player simultaneous play, new game boards and mini-games. Also, per the release, it says that you\'ll be able to play MONOPOLY in \"offline single or multi-player mode\". No online multiplayer?

This game can go directly to jail, do not pass go and do not collect the $40.00 - $59.99 price tag.

Amen.

Monopoly is one of the few arcade games I'd be willing to buy. I guarantee they'd make more if they just sold a traditional monopoly game with single player and xbox live modes on the arcade.

No way in hell I'm getting it now.

Here is the problem with so called video game journalism. That original press release never made mention of any XBLA titles, just "multiple platforms". You have a bunch of hacks that jump to conclusions and ASSUME that something is going somewhere when it is never stated as such. Too many people are all about trying to be first or sensationalizing it, whether they are right or not...

Here is the original news piece I posted on this at Gaming Nexus when it came out on 2/11/08. It also includes the original press release, read for yourselves.

My comments after actually reading the release in its entity was:

"Sadly, no XBLA or PSN titles were announced at this time"

I think the best board game for XBLA would be RISK. They could just port RISK II and I would be happy.

Hard to argue that point. Maybe you didn't read or catch the part about "fueled rumors of an Xbox Live Arcade" in the first sentence. I never said it was coming to the Xbox Live Arcade. The "sensationalizing" title even stated that.

You commented on 2/11/08: "Sadly, no XBLA or PSN titles WERE announced AT THIS TIME" and now I have confirmed your ORIGINAL comment on this date of 4/23/08.

Please re-read my original post above. I never said that there was a press release confirming an XBLA launch or even that anyone said there would be. Granted, I should have inserted the word "rumored" into the blog.

I'm not about to argue, or get into a pissing contest with an admin, but please consider the fact that I never made the assertation of it being confirmed for the Xbox Live Arcade.

I'm going to have to agree here. I would not have posted this if I felt differently about EA and Hasbro's decision to go retail at near full price. With XBLA games like Penny Arcade coming in at Xbox Original prices, I for one would have paid 1200 MS Points or more for Monopoly. I won't, however part with the $40+ expected price tag for this game retail.

Can we say "bargain bin" or bust? :baffled:

LOL

Unfortunately I used a poor choice of wording and did not make it clear that my rant wasn't directed at you. It was directed at sites that took the original release (and the lazy schmucks that just reported what the speculators thought) and ran with it.

Thanks PSORaine, you nailed it exactly. Still, my wording didn't make it clear so I can understand the reaction....

Understood. I should not have jumped the gun on that with the haste post. And thanks PSORaine. You were right! :D

Now back to the discussion... who is going to pay that kind of money for a virtual version of the game when you can get the board game for like $20?

And no online multiplayer?? :baffled:
