For someone who has played the game for almost 150 hours now, I think the game is definitely worth it. Even without the DLC. The DLC just adds to my love of the game. I am currently working through Point Lookout, which is the 4th of the 5 DLC packs, and I am loving it.
If you are unsure about making a purchase, rent the game and give it a shot. Or borrow it off of a friend if you know someone that has it. But give it a shot and take your time with it and I think you will enjoy it.
Also, its at 1550, not 1750.

i for one couldn't get into it but to each his own. i hated the HUD and navigation.

yep yep. you have a huge open world and you can explore pretty much all of it right from the start, although the enemies don't level with you like they do in oblivion. so if you walk into the wrong area too early you will get slaughtered lol.
it's my personal favorite game, but like irish said it's not for everyone.
and like others have stated wait for the GotY edition to save some $$$

Fallout 3 isn't as good as Oblivion because the environment is all like.. EXPLOSIONMUTANTSOHMYGOD
