I have one question to ask you dear reader, what happened to the genre I
love? The world war two, one-person-shooter genre? I played the demo to
Hour of Victory and I shed a tear. A tear over a videogame and not because
of a sad CG scene. The controls were clunky, the graphics were from LAST
GENERATION, and the general gameplay wasnt what I had expected. The game had some interesting ideas (choosing from three different types of soldier at the start of each level, and having certain parts of the level that
could only be triggered by that character is what I noticed in the demo.)
But you know what? Everything else completely trashed the game.

Now, Im told that the world war two genre is played out. All I hear in
gaming magazines nowadays is: oh crap, not another ww2 game. Well you
know what? There is SO MUCH MORE to the war than what is shown in these
games. Every single game has D-Day. Okay, yes, we get it. There was a big
invasion of Normandy in world war two. Can we move on to something else?
Stalingrad? Again? Sniper battle, yeah got it. El Alamein, Desert Rats and
Afrika Corps. Check. The only game I have played that went away from the
African and European campaigns is Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, which
started at Pearl Harbor and continued on to the atomic bombing. And even
though the gameplay wasnt the best, I enjoyed the idea. They took a
chance. And I cant fault them for that at all.

But housemdfan, you said there was more to the war. What else is there?
What else is there? Theres the Blitzkrieg, the Battle of Britain,
Guadalcanal, Berlin, etc., You can even move away from straight battles
and do the Medal of Honor thing where youre an OSS operative. But instead
you go deep undercover, become the enemy, give secrets to the Allies. You
could even choose which character you want to play. Male or female? Young,
almost direct from boot camp, or old grandpa soldier? Which unit will you
go undercover into? Luftwaffe? Schutzstaffel(SS)? Wehrmacht? Gestapo? It
would have major roleplaying elements. Im imagining an open-world type of
game. The second world war is your oyster! What do you want to do?

I am a big fan of the world war two genre. I enjoy it. I have so many
ideas for the genre. I just wish people in the industry had similar ideas
to refresh this genre. Theres a new game coming out where instead of
fighting Nazis youre fighting an alien race during the WW2 time period. I
know. Not what I want. Speak up gamers. Do you really hate the world war
two genre being revisited? Or do you not care? Do you not care that the
veterans, the soldiers who gave their lives wont be remembered through
(good) gameplay. But with gameplay with bad graphics, bad voice acting,
bad controls. This is the next generation, lets breathe new life into the
genre developers!

As of this moment we have Medal of Honor: Airborne out now and Brothers in Arms coming out. And I am really excited. I honestly cannot wait! What I have played of MOH: Airborne makes me really happy and I can't wait to play the retail version when I can get my hands on it.

Note: Sorry for the weird spacing, I copied and pasted and it got all wacky.

BoA looks really, really stunning. I am really tired of the WWII genre though. Its played out and really, really stale at this point. BoA refines this with actual areas and actual events that resemble as if you went there and it would look exactly the same...which is crazy. This idea reminds me of the getaway how they designed the in game london by the actual city.

You mean BiA? And again with the whole 'actual areas and actual events'. MOH: A does the same EXACT THING.

sorry house there are more games about WW II than the length of the actual war. I love the genre too but its been done to death. Its almost as bad as the GTA clones that pop out every year. The Gaming world needs something fresh like bioshock or even COD 4 (change of time and place). Maybe if a little time is given to let the genre rest then maybe it will make a comeback.

The genre only needs some innovation, that's all. If they give it something new, like what I mentioned in my editorial, then people may think differently. Of course, I am no game developer, and I wish I could give my ideas to a company and have them make a game, but I think I'd have to pay them for it to be made. Perhaps it's just that I'm a huge ww2 buff and since I wasn't able to experience it first hand, video games is the best I can do. I don't know, I just know I don't want to see the genre die. Cause if it does then I will be sad and you'll see me playing games like COD2 and MOH over and over out of nostalgia.

well house i agree with you i also love the ww2 genre but i think the games have gotten played out and arent as good as they should be. and the ideas that you have are really good i think. and i know if they ever came out with a game like that i would play it just about non stop. and i do agree that developers need a game with more pizaz and something to do the whole ww2 genre and the whole time period all together justice.

I wish a developer would see my ideas. But I'd also want some royalties from it, y'know? It wouldn't be cricket if I gave my ideas away for free like that. I guess I'm just being selfish. At the very least I'd want to be contacted and give them more ideas. Since I only posted the bare details.

That's alright. I would try e-mailing a publisher like Infinity Ward or the guys who made MOH but I'm afraid it would be ignored and i'd be sad.

Ah well. -shrugs- I don't think developers take the ideas of normal gamers like me anyways. And I'm not sure how many people would be on board for a ww2 RPG like game. Maybe Bethesda could make it...
