Obama's speech in Grand Junction (1-2 hours away from where I live in Colorado) was great today

I really have to ask, specifically you Jackson since your into politics. What do you think about the governor of South Carolina? I for one cannot believe he is still in office. I think elected officials even at the highest authority have to remember that the eyes of the whole state and nation are on them and they are like a role model for all of us Americans or Michiganders, Ohioans or whatever you may be.
If you're talking about his unfaithfulness, I honestly have no problem with Mark Sanford. I actually pity him. I read his letters between him and his love interest and they reveal that he truly was in love. She wasn't just some bimbo he was using to satisfy his lust. Love is a complicated emotion and for some couples it doesn't last forever. He told his wife about the affair and he had the bravery to admit his infidelity publicly.
I was only eight years old when Bill Clinton was impeached and so was obviously not politically-interested, but in retrospect I don't think I'd have a problem with his infidelity either. I definitely would have had a problem with the perjury charge, but unfaithfulness alone isn't enough for me to want a politician removed from office.
All in all, I actually really like and respect Mark Sanford. My only beef with him is his initial refusal to accept stimulus funds. I understand and agree with the message he was trying to send, but the people of South Carolina were footing the bill for the stimulus just as much as the rest of the country. He should've simply been vocal about his dissent but accepted the funds.

Do you honestly believe those love letters are real? I agree with you about Clinton. At least Clinton didn't disappear for a weekend to run off to South America to cheat on his wife. He just got a BJ under his desk at work.

There's not one set of morals that all individuals believe in. Infidelity harms the spouse, but Mark Sanford made sure to admit his love of Maria Chapur to his wife. I don't think there's anything inherently immoral in falling in love with someone else.
As for the alleged hypocrisy, I know he reimbursed the state for several thousands that were borderline unacceptable. As a governor, he's undoubtedly and invariably busy. When he has private business, speed and efficiency are pivotal so he can return to public business as soon as possible. Ethics laws like the one preventing officials from using state aircraft for private business are meant to prevent blatant abuse. His use could hardly be classified as such. If you take any governor and put him or her under the scrutiny Sanford has received after his announcement, I'm sure you would find similar results. After his infidelity, people are trying to make a case against him for anything, even where there is no case. It is the nature of the nasty side of politics that cares more about what might incite the public than reality.

I have yet to hear of anyone questioning the legitimacy of those letters. The State received the letters before there was ever any suggestion of an affair.

Since when does distance matter? In my eyes, infidelity for the sake of lust is less virtuous than infidelity for the sake of love.

You're right. The rest of his family could definitely be emotionally damaged by his infidelity.
Regardless, I am not willing to allow someone's personal life affect my judgement of their performance as a public official.

In local events, my friend: Captain XCSNX just lost a beard growing competition with his friend Exempt Terror. So if you feel like poking fun at his manliness, be my guest

The Democrats, my home state Senator Harry Reid in particular, could really use a backbone. Say what you will about Teddy Kennedy, at least we know he had one.
