I do consider myself to be a computer geek though. I've got the two degrees to back it up (computer science and network administration). But I've loved computers ever since I was a little kid.

I don't think all gamers are geeks. There are definately some gamers that are geeks though.

I play games for fun and fix computers for a living...but I wouldn't say I'm a geek...maybe a little

Naw, gamers aren't geeks. If they were, almost all of the teenage male population of the United States would be geeks.
I'm a geek, but not at all because of gaming.

I once read a somewhat tongue-in-cheek article that attempted to define the difference between nerds, geeks and dorks.
It basically said "nerds" are people that are usually extremely academically- and/or technologically-inclined and so deeply obsessed with their jobs & hobbies that they are socially inept and yet often oblivious of this.
"Geeks" were simply defined as people that are very involved & knowledgeable with at least one occupation or hobby that would be considered esoteric.
"Dorks" were defined by extreme social ineptitude and a general lack of skill or knowledge in any particular area.
Besides being humorous, I actually liked how the article laid it all out. By these definitions, the average or "casual" gamer that is becoming so common is neither a geek or a nerd.
The "core" gamer, or people like me that own multiple pieces of game-related clothing & memorabilia, would be considered a geek but not a nerd. I definitely consider myself a gaming geek since I've owned so many different systems and played so many different games, often choosing to game over my other hobbies like music, modeling, etc.
The stereotypical antisocial gamer, aka the acne-ridden lump stuck in a dark basement, would be considered a nerd due to extreme preoccupation and a lack of smooth, James Bond-esque social skills which geeks like me have in spades

I read that the definition of 'geek' is "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc". Geeks are just a stereotype though, so I say nay to gamers being geeks.
A peculiar or odd person though? I'm one
By the way.. The word geek derives from the german root, geck, which means: fool, or freak.

I don't like to think of myself as a geek, although I do spend a lot of time on the box, so I guess the proper word would just be casual/hardcore gamer. Either one is fine.

I can not be so simply categorized as gamer, geek, or nerd. Nor would you ever see me sporting anything from G8. People are people so enough with the labels.
