Well, I guess I should have expected it, 3 red lights on my 360.

Fired up the ol' 360 this morning ready to rock out to some GH2. GH2 says "I need an update" I tell it, sure, go ahead. GH2 restarts and I select the song I am ready to rock out to and everything froze. I figured, ah, gotta restart this bad boy. Turn it off, turn it on, the 360 boot screen freezes and viola, 3 red lights flashing on the front of my console.

Called support, they said sounds like a hardware failure, coffin should arrive in 4-5 days. Then after they receive it it should be another two weeks or something according to the CSR.

My real problem is going to be I will not be able to play any of the Live Arcade games offline and not connected to Live. That is going to upset me to no end as most here know I own the live arcade collection and I guess I'm going to be punished for doing so.

Hopefully I can get this all turned around and get a 360 (as I'm sure I will never see my original) back before the Halo 3 beta begins next month.

When my 360 failed, I got the coffin in 3 days and got it back in about a week. It was actually pretty fast.

Sorry man, tough luck. I suppose now is better than the May 15th, the day before the beta starts. My 360 is thankfully still ticking. I've got 3 red lights a few times but a restart has always fixed it. I may have just mistaken the 4 red lights from not being connected to a display as 3. Hope you get it back soon.

my 3 red light story: I called them they said we will send a box and I said ok, a month goes by and I call them again, and here is what they said: O we are sorry we will send a box :)

But after they sent the box it took only 10 days for me to get a new 360

You should get a turnaround fairly quickly, and get your original unit back. See the new standards regarding the warranty policy...

Guitar Hero II publisher RedOctane has admitted that some users are experiencing problems with a patch released for the Xbox 360 version over the weekend.
The update, released on Saturday, was supposed to help users whose copies of the game were refusing to acknowledge input from the Xplorer controller's whammy bar.

However forum threads quickly sprang up on Xbox.com and the official Guitar Hero website complaining that the patch was followed immediately by system freezes and, in some cases, the dreaded ring of death - the only answer to which is returning the console to Microsoft.

For gamers whose consoles are now out of warranty, that could mean a significant charge from Microsoft in order to get it fixed.

RedOctane initially declined to comment, but this afternoon a spokesperson told Eurogamer: "We're aware of the problem and we're looking into it."

Given how quickly the last patch was released, it's probably safe to expect something in the near future. What will be interesting though is how the publisher intends to deal with customers who claim their consoles have been "bricked" by the update.

Interesting read. I don't care for how Eurogamer spun this article, as Red Octane didn't "admit" anything, just said they were aware of the issue and were going to take a look at it.

Yes, I realize that, but they did say they were aware of the issue. Either way I have a bricked console and just waiting on the box to ship it back.

Being 'aware of the issue' admits that there is an issue, though? Or at least that's just my interpretation. If that's not what they meant they could've worded their statement a little better.

If this is true, I'd expect to see some agreement between RedOctane and Microsoft to repair consoles no longer supported by the warranty for free.

I have had my console powered off, removed everything and moved it out its spot in my television stand.

I figured, what the heck, I will try and see if it will power itself on.

Low and behold, it powered up and I don't have the 3 red lights of death at this point.

My question is, do I still send in my console as there apparently is some hardware issue that may have temporarily fixed itself. I have the "coffin" on its way and should be here tomorrow. Or do I keep using my console until it errors out again?

I would say call MS and let them know that it came back on. Tell them you will keep the box in case it does it again. That way it is much faster to send it back to them.

If your warranty is almost up for some reason, you may want to go ahead and send it in within the time period, though. You might as well keep playing until it really dies. No point, that I can see, in sending it in if it is playing fine now, as long as MS knows what your plans are.

Edit: P.S. - I never knew that if you simply unplug your Xbox 360 and remove the hard drive, your 360 clock / date resets itself. I found that out the otherday when I was troubleshooting something with MS. This may indeed be the reason it reset itself.

I've always learned when it comes to electronics to try to unplug it for a while before I assume it is dead. Sometimes it just needs a break from the electric. :)
