Schools to Receive Unreal Engine 4 for Free

Epic Games, the North Carolina based video game studio made famous for the "Gear of Wars "Series, has given unlimited access to its Unreal Engine 4 to colleges and universities around the country today.

The Unreal Engine 4 is a set of video game development tools created exclusive by Epic. They were designed to create first person shooters but since its creation, has been use for a variety of genre since 1998.

Ray Davis, the general manager over at Unreal Engine Inc. stated:

"Nothing is stopping students from honing the skills needed to enter the range of fields using Unreal Engine technology, from entertainment software and film to visualization, healthcare simulation and military training.”

The engine, which can be downloaded from this link can be installed and used on school computers, or a personal copies can be provided free of charge to all students enrolled in school that has an accredited architecture, computer science, art, video game development, simulation, and visualization programs.

College students who use the engine in their classrooms would undoubtedly be giving a huge advantage once graduating and beginning to look for full time employment.

Some examples of upcoming games that are being created using the engine are: Unreal Tournament (2014 video game), Fable Legends, Rime, and H-Hour: World's Elite.

That's Unreal Engine 3 -- it's free to download and use up until you make more than $25,000, at which point they want their cut.

That's Unreal Engine 3 -- it's free to download and use up until you make more than $25,000, at which point they want their cut.

Purely a business move on Epics part if you get it into the schools and they get familiar with it they won't go to another possibly better engine. Think M$ making deals with PC makers
to have their systems run only Windows.

...yes, and a lot of schools are running Macs these days - same strategy.

I am looking forward to playing around with the Unreal Engine. Some of the classes that are offered (I will be taking) at my school are using the Unreal Engine 3.
