It's so time consuming and half the time it misses, even if you had all the VATS stats upgraded and your weapons upgraded as well.
Three weapons that never miss in VATS, Ol Painless (Republic of Dave) and Lincolns Repeater (Museum of American History). Also the Xuanlong Assault Rifle (Jury Street Metro Station)
Yea I have them, but what's the fun in having the computer shoot for you? It takes more skill to fight in that game without vats, that's for sure.

The way I look at VATS is this, it was made to help people who aren't used to shooters aim. It also help with critical hits, as some weapons only have critical hits while you use the weapon in VATS. I use both VATS and free aiming while playing, it really just comes down to the situation that I'm in.
Yea, I would mainly use the Gauss rifle or the plasma cannon. Those things are monsters.

i actually think VATS was made to "ween" fallout 1 and 2 veterans off turn-based gameplay.

Yeah man I don't really use the Gauss as much, but I always love using the Plasma Rifle.

Well I don't know really, VATS was heavily influenced by the ability to shoot specific body parts in the first two Fallout games. So really it was Bethesda doing there best to keep the game reminiscent of it's turn based roots, sure it wasn't fully turn based but what good would a first person turn based game do? I know it would have pissed me off if they had went that route.
That's for sure... It would've been like first person view in a gun fight, lol. I for one, would not have appreciated that as well. I think F3 is perfect the way it is, we'll just have to wait and see what New Vegas has to offer.

haha well you see guys, i was playing on very easy mode, had 2 weeks to beat the game (which i didnt even end up doing) my aim sucks, i had crappy weapons, and i did all my VAT shooting at really close range at the head, so i rarely missed. there were times i had to save before each fight and then reload the game if i missed, yeah... but i still waisted less time with VAT than if i didnt use it

Why would you have to save before a fight? On very easy the enemies were TERRIBLE.

^ i found the very beginning of the game kind of hard on very easy, honestly.
but only until i had a decent amount of ammo, lol.
are you talking about a specific patch?
when i ran through 1 and 2 i always had the same % to hit no matter where i aimed. i guess now that i think about it i always shot for the head though, lol. but yeah, i say "ween" because it's much less turn-based, but VATS still gives you a small advantage.
and yes, a first person turn-based fallout would FAIL.

Yeah, I think the only time I saved before I fight was before the last fight and that was only because it was before the patched the ending.
On topic: I can't wait until this comes out. I just hope the game plays the same as 3. I loved how the game played and I hope they have this game along the same lines.

That's true, but if you didn't save it automatically made me a save before the final fight which was nice because I didn't save. Thank god it did for me so I could then do all the side quests after I beat the game. Phew!
