Gunstar Heroes XBLA Review
So basically, Red, Blue, and Green, (names of the twins in the Gunstar family) are out on a mission to stop a guy named Smash Daisaku (who looks like a rip off of M. Bison) and General Grey from taking over the world. The brother Green gets brainwashed and is one of the bad guys. The plot of the game involves you blowing the shit out of everything you see on screen in order to fight a boss, and retrieve one of four diamonds in order to prevent the awakening of Golden Silver.
This is my first review , and I'd like to start off saying I really love this game. The game is not like Contra where you get only three lives and you start the game all over now, but it's a lot more merciful, yet still offers a stiff challenge. At first, you have the option to start off playing one of four stages. But after beating all four, the game continues down a linear path eliminating the option to choose your stages. The difficulty is fairly.......................... fair. This game will punish you in the later levels though.
There's nothing wrong with the controls with the game, you can figure out how to shoot and jump and throw people and things just fine. However, I'd like to point out the game frustrates me a bit when jumping and shooting at the same time limits how far you can jump. It was annoying, but not a major setback for a great game. There are only four weapons throughout the entire game. However, you can carry two at a time (including two of the same), and you can combine them to make awesome combinations. This brings the number of weapons to 14 weapons throughout the game. For ex. if you combine a flamethrower and a laser, you get a light saber. If you combine homing needles with a machine gun, you get a gun that shoots giant homing machine gun bullets. I have to say, this game is impressive with the options to destroy your enemies.
This game has few enemy types, such as drones, those flying things, and robot ninjas. However, there are as many bosses in the game as there are enemy types. This means you'll be fighting an in game boss or mini boss constantly. Ever fought a migdit soldier before? Didn't think so. Every level has something to offer that you haven't experienced in another game. This keeps the entertainment level fresh, so you won't know what your doing in the next level. The game is even more fun if you play with a friend. You can play with one online if I'm not mistaken.
The music in this game is good. I personally consider it one of my all time favorites in gaming. Excellent music score I'd say; it's stuck in my head still.
Graphics are amazing. Maybe they won't look good today, but for its time, I think its safe to assume it's the best looking Genesis game. As a matter of fact, this games graphics can compete with the SNES (I know, you think that's debatable) and so and so. I'm impressed that there is tons of on screen action and there is no in game slow down!
Over all, there's no big in game faults, provided that you can beat the game in a few hours and there's no point in playing it again unless on the "Expert" difficulty.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo................................... 9. 4 out of 10. Also, even tho 120 gamerscore doesn't sound like much for a 400 msp game, I still recommend you buy it just because it's fun.
