Tekken 6 Game Review!

Game Review | November 4, 2009 2:59 pm

Tekken, one of the worlds first 3D fighters to ever be released has now made its way to the Xbox 360, with it sixth installment of the series! You have 40 characters to choose from and one big and nasty boss named Azazel. The game is huge with its new Scenario Campaign mode (previously known as Tekken Force Mode). With character customization now available for your favorite characters, what could this game possibly not offer!?

Graphics/Visuals - Tekken 6, sports some very nice environment details. The different arenas you can battle it out in are very unique and sport many different visuals. The new "Tiers" in levels add even more curiosity to the player as you smash your opponent to the ground, and you find yourself falling to a whole new area. The character models look great, but can look jagged at times. In the Scenario campaign, each level is different, and has its own perks and looks as you travel through each area, and they look good and it plays very smooth. I do not think I ever lost 60FPS during this game, it always kept clean and moved fast. The user customization for all the characters adds a new dimension to the game. The many costumes, and equipment you can add to one player, is huge, making each custom character unique in look.

Sound/Music - Tekken 6, has the same mixture of action packed music, and almost the same sounding hits. Nothing has really changed in this department from previous installments. The voiceovers and action in Scenario Mode, is what give the game anything to shine in this area. The voices are done correctly, per each fighters origin, ie. Japanese fighters speak Japanese, as Americans speak English. Other than that, nothing really to boast here.

Controls - Well if you were used to spamming with Eddy/Christie, like I was, too bad. Lots of the moves sets have changed, and you will find yourself, doing something you did not intend to do, and end up losing a round or luckily winning one, lol. Scenario mode, has a pretty good control setup. Some folks rush in and only use the left stick to move around and fight, but in reality the game was made to use the LS to move around freely and the D-Pad to fight in combat. Nothing to really curse about here, as it does well.

Achievements - The game has a decent amount of achievements, but the majority of them are focused on the Scenario Mode but some are also online based. Some of the achieves, are also dang hard to complete, as some will find out when fighting NANCY or trying to beat some of the more difficult hidden levels on Scenario Mode. Make sure your difficulty is on Easy unlike me who did all the fighting on Ultra Hard like a Moron, and you will have no issues getting the 1K. Take between 9-12hrs to complete depending on skill.

Replay Value - Come on, It is Tekken! You will always find yourself coming back to battle buddies at home, or find someone online to duke it out with. The game in its own right is a classic and will always be here to stay on the XBOX 360 from now on!

Overall - The game is a great game, it does have some flaws in the AI engine, as I think Azazel and some of the missions on Scenario mode are a pain the butt to finish off. Also juggling can be a pain in the butt if your on the receiving end. I enjoyed every bit of it, but do wish they would have put towards more effort into the CGI endings and the scenario mode. By the way, make sure and beat the game with Armor King, Marduk, and King, as I think they have the best endings in the game!

Here are the JuniorMT Ratings
Graphics: 8.5
Sounds: 7.5
Controls: 7.5
Achievements: 9.5
Replay Value: 9.5
Overall: 8.5

I'm surprised this got a 8.5, to me it was a let down compared to Tekken 3 and 5. I think overall I would have given this a 3.0

Yeah I played it and was extremely let down, while games like BlazBlue are innovating - Tekken seems perfectly happy to stagnate in its own muck.

Well some do not like it, but comparing it to blazblue, or games of those sorts would not be a proper comparison. They are two different types of fighters. The only competitor I would compare it with would be Street Fighter IV, and personally, they both are great fighters.

I enjoyed it very much, but not all will agree. If Tekken 6 gets some DLC and possibly an old school story mode, I think it could be great.

As far as I am concerned, we finally got it on our system, and now it is time they improve and make Tekken 7, the best ever.

As far as my ratings go, I rate based on certain criteria. now if I would have had a Gameplay/Ideas area, I am sure it would have scored low, just because it is basicly the same as any of the other Tekken games. But I rate fairly as to what graphics, sounds, controls, it has to bring to the table.

I had a review that I wrote but when I submittied it there was some sort of error. But anyway, I agree, I think Tekken 6 was some what of a let down..It's still a solid fighting game but for the 6th installment on this next Gen system I was expecting alot more. The scenario mode needs some work as the camera often times have you hitting thin air because of it's unreliability (It goes crazy sometimes). Graphics are damn good on some boards then so so on others. Combos that I used on Tekken 3 still work which is good, but for $60 there should have been more depth. All the characters are already unlocked from the beginning which didn't give me much reason to play arcade mode other than to get a couple of achievements. Tekken 6 is, like I said, a solid fighter, but if you've played Tekken 2 and up, then you've pretty much played this. Not to take any credit from JuniorMT because he writes some very good reviews, but I give Tekken 6 a 7 or maybe I'm stretching it, a 7.5...good but not great and could've and should've been better.

i enjoyed scenario campaign mode a lot, and i think thats what affects my judgment overall. But Chris you are right, I would have rather unlocked all of the fighters separately as that would have allowed for more replayability and depth. I didnt have any issues with the camera on Scenario mode at all either...

these are what are also bringing up the ratings for this game, so take that into your consideration

Achievements: 9.5
Replay Value: 9.5

if you take the other ones only

Graphics: 8.5
Sounds: 7.5
Controls: 7.5

You then have a solid 7.75, which would match most peoples rating on the game.

I actually really enjoyed Scenario Mode.

And personally, I liked that the fighters are all unlocked because it let me and my roommates get right to versus and use whoever we want. The single player grinding and playing came later, which worked out well. Usually fighters get it the other way around, you have to bring it home and grind it for a few days to get stuff unlocked before you go online or start fighting with friends, but I like how here you can jump in with the best of both worlds.

Also, pro tip: turning off the Motion Blur will up the game's resolution, making it look much better (to me). Yeah the blur during really fast combos is nice but it makes the game look like a weird upscaled PS2 port to me. Turning it off lets the Xbox render it at 720p and it just looks sharper and cleaner, especially when the action isn't going super fast.

The big beef I do have with the game is that the net code is unforgivably bad. Fighters require timing and precision to really enjoy, and this game's online code is way too lossy. It's like playing Super Street Fighter HD with the "net smoothing" set to high on a 1 bar match--except in Tekken it's like that even with optimal green net. SF4 has a nigh impeccable net code that allows precision fighting even at only half the optimal latency, Namco should've spent less time adding stuff to Scenario to tighten up their net play.

As far as the net play goes did anyone notice you will get less laggy game play in player matches 1 out of 10, as compared to ranked matches 9 laggy matches out of ten.
Is it just me do I suck or do I smell on-line shenanigens. (or both like some of you will opt for)
Currently with Yoshimistsu #3 in time attack and #6 in survival, so yes i have an idea on how to play?
It still a damn good fighting game, at least the computer doesn't counter ever puch you throw D.O.A.
I'd give it 7 out of 10

I was kind of surprised GI gave Tekken 6 an 8.75 but they solely based it on the fighting aspect and not the Scenario mode.
