No that's what I mean - if you weigh too much or can't move you can't just get a bariatric surgery. The doctors evaluate the patient because they can die from the surgery if they don't follow the orders properly...

Well for a person thats only 5'2" and 600 lbs, there BMI is gonna be extremely high and body fat thats not any better, well over 50%. The safest bet for surgery would most likely be a gastric band. And like I said, if the weight loss were to be absolutely necessary before surgery, I can't seem em running on a treadmill for very long so start them on something low impact but add some strength training into the mix so they can build muscle and that in turn will help burn the fat.

Oh my! I was making a joke... Like that was part of the first sentence. Bad joke, I guess. :sorry:

I can't watch The Biggest Loser, it's exhausting. But I did watch Rachel Ray last year when she had a 280 lb teenager on trying to lose 70 lbs before prom. That girl was kind of a spoiled little bitch.

Well, my guess was right and, while I won't step on a scale just yet, my pants are fitting a bit more snug than when I left. I've started a strict diet of around six small meals a day, and like I said very little to no carbs after 3p.m. I've also switched from the Creatine Monohydrate to a capsule; I dislike all of the side effects I've heard caused by creatine (high risk of kidney stones). I don't know how well the capsules work, or if they even share the same side effects, but I figured I'd give them a go.

Unfortunately, Monday was my first shot at Stronglifts, and I managed to somehow injure my knee. I have no idea how, as it didn't hurt at all while doing the exercises or afterwards, but yesterday morning I was in a bit of pain. I have my girlfriend on a full body workout plan using the machines much like I did myself when I first started going to the gym. I may go along wit her routine for the rest of the week, sans legs, until my knee heals up and try again next week.

Any thoughts on a front squat versus a back squat? I can only assume that my knee injury came from squatting improperly; I've done heave weight back squats before, but only in a Smith machine. I've done back squats with a barbell, but at much less weight than in the Smith machine, and never as low as Stronglifts requires. I'm thinking that when I get back to it I may substitute either front or even goblet squats instead of back squats, working hard on proper form. I thought I had good form, but apparently not :-/ Unfortunately, all of the trainers at my gym are what I like to call "Bros" and the only advice they would give, if I could get them away from the female clientele long enough to ask them, would be to not squat so low.

I also really enjoy your take on working out, Mini. I've definitely subscribed to that a few times. Like Lewis Black says, when you want to work out just go to iHOP; guaranteed there's someone there at least 300 lbs heavier than you. Its on the back of the menu, read it some time.

Haha I love that joke from Lewis black, one of my favorite comedians.

Squats are the best lift you can do to strengthen your legs and I don't know how low ur squatting or what your form is but you wanna have your feet shoulder width, or for wide squats a few inches past shoulder width, and your toes pointed slightly outwards. When you squat down, keep your back straight and don't let your knees go past your toes and when u hit the bottom of the lift your hamstrings should be parallel to the floor. Drive your heels into the floor and don't use your back when you are coming back up.

Also there is quite a bit of difference between regular squats with a barbell, front squats and smith machine squats. I'd probably use the smith machine if you want to start to improve your form as the bar will never move forwards or backwards, just up and down, but no matter how much weight you put on it, it will always be lighter than a normal squat. Front squats are also a great way to improve form because the bar is in front of you and forces you keep your back straight. If u wanna start off kind of easy and still get a good workout, you can just do single leg squats by holding dumbells and putting one foot up on a bench behind you and squat down.

I thought about this post the other day because there was an article somewhere talking about people who gain weight on cruise ships and it said the average person will gain 7 to 10 lbs on a cruise.

That's definitely a true statement; as our cruise director joked about, when on a cruise you get a whole new gauge for when you're hungry, lol. Stronglifts says that your hip joint has to go below your knee joint in order for it to be a full squat. The reason behind this being that your knee is at its strongest in the fully flexed, and fully upright positions.

I tweaked my ankle the very last day of the cruise trying to dance while the boat was rocking (the bucket of beer I had earlier probably contributed a little as well), so I think that was part of the reason I injured my knee, since I couldn't fully support the weight correctly. My form has improved significantly from when I first began squatting, so I'm going to try and heal up and give it another go next week. I don't think I have a problem with keeping my back straight, but of course I cannot examine myself fully while performing the squats either.

While I'm picking your brain Tig, any thoughts on full body versus split workouts? I recommended a full body for my girlfriend since its what I started and seemed to work, plus she dislikes free weights or laying down (bench presses, etc.), so the machines work for her. She's looking to tone and loose her midsection, as well as work on an injury in her shoulder (we're a mess, apparently, lol). Sorry for all the questions, I just enjoy the good, constructive answers as opposed to the aptly-titled "Bro-Science" responses I hear come out of the trainers mouths at the gym.

Typically you would use full body workouts for losing weight and toning but that limits how much you can work out a week since your muscles need a day to rest so your strength workouts would be a Monday-Wednesday-Friday split with Tuesday and Thursday used for cardio. If you are trying to build mass and get stronger you could do a 4 or 5 day strength training schedule where you would focus on 2-3 different muscle groups such as a chest and abs workout on monday, back and calves on tuesday, arms on wednesday, then a day of rest of cardio on thursday, legs and abs on friday and then shoulders, calves and traps on saturday. There are so many variations on exercises and training on what days you can do what exercise and muscle. It just depends on what exactly your goals are. Thats why most personal trainers will sit you down for a fitness assessment and find out where you sit right now as far as your fitness is and talk about what your goals are.
