Being a former fat kid, I have been going to the gym regularly for a couple of years now. Running through P90X and Beach Body's Insanity earlier this year, I've been kind of lax as of late. Plus I'm going on a cruise, and that's guaranteed weight gain right there. When I get back next week, I want to diet hard and train harder. I've read up on Stronglifts 5x5. I know some XbA members lift, so I was wondering if anyone had tried it and/or had similar programs? What works for you guys? What's your diet like?

I'm about 180, 12% body fat (I'm sure a bit more when I get back from vacation). I realize Stronglifts is a beginner's program, but I've never had any formal training so I figure there is as good a place as any to start. I really do want to perfect my form, and Stronglifts gives the opportunity to do that. I've done a few diets since originally loosing weight (at my largest I was 265 about three years ago), tried to stay low to no carb, I've also done alternating carb and no carb every other day. I'm thinking when I get back I'm going to follow the six small meals a day, and absolutely no carbs after 3P.M. Any thoughts on particular diets? I realize eating clean is key, and I try to do that whenever possible.

I'm also using my newfound laziness to my advantage; I've always wanted to bulk up muscle wise, but since loosing almost 100 pounds I've been afraid to eat the way I need and put on weight to convert it to muscle. I figure with the weight I'm going to put on, combined with a diet and the Stronglifts routine, I'll be good to go. The main thing I'm looking for is to bulk up my upper body, while loosing my stomach (isn't everyone?). So how do you guys eat? What works for you?

I eat every 2-2 1/2 hrs. I use Syntha 6 protein powder with warm water about 3 times a day and real meals with high protein, medium carbs for the other meals. I lift then do cardio right after to increase the calorie burn. Seems to work pretty good for me

Any other types of supplements? I take two scoops of Whey Protein mixed with water after working out, and a multi-vitamin in the mornings, along with fish oil and a mixture of water and Bragg's apple cider vinegar, but the later two are more for health reasons than any type of work out benefit. I've taken creatine monohydrate in the past as well, but I haven't taken it in a while now.

Glad to hear about your progress. I was the opposite im 6'3 was 165 got tired of being small so started lifting and now im 217.
. On topic since you haven't really lifted you should start a beginners program some good ones are riptoes starting strength, body by design (its a book with alot of motivation and a killer 12 week workout schedule). I have taken plenty of supplements and all you really need is what you have maybe creatine if you would like depending on your age maybe a test booster would have benefits. It sounds like you already did some research got the best apple vinegar which I hope you drink through a straw or something lol. If you like green tea drinking at least 2 cups a day has alot of health benefits.

I'm a CPT and got my certification through NSCA. Congrats on ur weight loss, I know how hard it is for people to lose weight. The biggest problem is their lack of motivation which explains why most people who make some kind of fitness resolution for new years quit after about a month or 2. 180 and 12% body fat is pretty good, better than average and ur right on the money about nutrition being a huge factor, at least 80% of ur weight loss and overall fitness have to do with what u put in ur body. The p90x and beachbody stuff are great programs for burning fat but ur not gonna bulk up with those. I'd write more right now but I'm at work and on my phone so if u need any pointers, just ask. I could probably set up some kind of regimen based on ur info and goals.

I could but the tricky part is setting up routines and exercises for someone who can't be very mobile to begin with, most likely some sort of water aerobics, since this would have the least impact but still be able to do cardio and a little resistance training. Unless this person opts for some surgery beforehand.

I could but the tricky part is setting up routines and exercises for someone who can't be very mobile to begin with, most likely some sort of water aerobics, since this would have the least impact but still be able to do cardio and a little resistance training. Unless this person opts for some surgery beforehand.



Which they likely wouldn't receive until they lose weight. Nice catch eh?

Not suggesting lipo or anything, I mean they would have to do some sort of bariatric surgery to start the process of weight loss.

No that's what I mean - if you weigh too much or can't move you can't just get a bariatric surgery. The doctors evaluate the patient because they can die from the surgery if they don't follow the orders properly...

Well for a person thats only 5'2" and 600 lbs, there BMI is gonna be extremely high and body fat thats not any better, well over 50%. The safest bet for surgery would most likely be a gastric band. And like I said, if the weight loss were to be absolutely necessary before surgery, I can't seem em running on a treadmill for very long so start them on something low impact but add some strength training into the mix so they can build muscle and that in turn will help burn the fat.

Lol, oh I wasn't arguing with you. You're very right. It was just a bit of a shock to me to find out that those who might need the surgery the most can't get it. It does make sense they need to help themselves first, but also rough at the same time to be denied a surgery. But yeah, if they can't even get up they wouldn't even be a candidate for surgery.

I took care of a couple different patients after bariatric surgery. Their "diet" for the first day was 30 mL of water over an HOUR. 30 mL equals two teaspoons..... and they couldn't drink it all at once. One of many reasons why the patients are screened, no self control at all = serious complications from surgery.

I don't like reality shows. My wife is a huge fan of The Biggest Loser - to her it inspires her to work out (though she is only slightly overweight based on BMI). However for me I look at the contestants, and say "well, I may be overweight, but I'm not that bad" and go eat a doughnut.

I am guilty of watching the Biggest Loser with a plate of bacon myself... That show on the discovery channel followed a person for 7 years, being severely overweight, having bariatric surgery, recovering, slipping, having skin removed, struggling with following the plan, etc.

It was crazy watching the whole journey, felt a bit like I was gawking, but I was pulling for 'em.
