Games with Gold - September 2017

Sept 1st: Forza Motorsport 5 GOTY, Hydro Thunder Hurricane

Sept 16th: Oxenfree, Battlefield 3

Game Pass additions: 10 Second Ninja X, Fable II, Garou Mark of the Wolves, Hue, Metro: Last Light Redux, ReCore definitive edition, The Bridge

Forza 5 is a good driving game -- it allows you to lower difficulty and set assists to give an arcade experience, but is at its best when you treat it more as a simulator. Friends' drivatars are hilarious. This is the GOTY edition so it has extra cars and, more importantly, more tracks which was my main complaint with the original version. Hydro Thunder is an arcade racer with jet-boats instead of cars. Once you get used to the physics, it's a lot of fun and has a nice progression of unlocks.

Oxenfree is an adventure style game with lite puzzles, interesting characters, and a touch of supernatural mystery. I've been eyeing this for awhile, and free is the perfect price to try it!

Battlefield 3 is an inexcusably old online shooter and MS should be ashamed. BF4 should have been here, not 3 for goodness' sake.

Fable II made some marked improvements over the first and is my favourite of the trilogy. Recommended to anyone that likes action-y RPGs. It starts slow but eventually becomes a sprawling adventure that lets you make your character the way you like it -- good or evil, and you can use any combo of melee, ranged and magic attacks. You can play co-op online but only the host actually gets character progression.

Garou Mark of the Wolves is a lesser-known but solid 2d fighting game, with surprising depth.

Metro: Last Light is an awesome story-centric shooter, sort of like a BioShock except with better gun variety and a post-apocalyptic setting. This XB1 version is great with improved visuals and smooth frame rate. Highly recommended to everyone, but note that it can be pretty damned difficult. ReCore got a really bad rap but personally I think it's fun. It's from Comcept, whose company head Keiji Inafune was the guy behind Mega Man. This game is sort of like the 3d MM Legacy games -- you explore and upgrade weapons and gadgets while doing light platforming and fun boss fights. I'm not sure what is different in this "definitive edition".

I don't know what is even the rest of these games. I think The Bridge is an artsy black & white puzzle game.

Mo the Surfer is a schooner and a gentleman.

I bought ReCore for my youngest son a little after it was released. He liked it and I watched him play it for a few hours. It wasn't really my sort of game but I don't think it was horrible.
