I think removing the thumbs (arrows right lol) is a good idea. I think most people use em to mark down people they dislike, I'm not sure its just my opinion

I would have to agree since the only person thumbed down in this thread is used. Hopefully the post by Pasta will keep people on track.

Just do it, everyone missuses it. And you guys wonder why I stopped coming on here. Its because everyone acts like they are five. Who cares if someone made a duplicate thread? Let a mod handle it and link him to a new one. Its noone else's responsibility.

I got two thumbs down just for saying this,

"Cant wait for this. One of my most anticipated for this year. First game surprised me, I ended up playing it five times through. "

My honest opinion, and if you guys dont want to hear it. You dont deserve to have my contributions to the community.

Apparently you missed the post by a mod who said it's not their job to do that.

That means that if we don't want to see 10,000 threads about how great bread tastes, we have to tell them ourselves.

Well said, bud.

I'd encourage everyone to not thumb down a post simply because they disagree. That said, it's not a big deal if people do. The thumbs are a way of bringing posts to a moderator's attention. If a post gets a very negative rating, a moderator will definitely see it. If it's a perfectly harmless post, nothing will happen. A few seconds of a moderator's time may be wasted, but it's a lot easier than combing through thousands of posts in the forums.

If they are only for that purpose, wouldn't it be more efficient to create a "Flag this post/thread option"which only the staff can see the results of?

Then repeat threads can be flagged without the thread turning into a discussion about the annoyance of repeat threads.

Flagging a post only provides a one-sided opinion. With our current system, when people think a post is legitimate and undeserving of moderation, they'll react to seeing a negative rating by giving it a positive one. It's more effective in representing the opinion of the community as a whole.

Right! The point is that if many people use it without abusing it, the posts that are truly offensive will surface and people ranking posts in a biased manner will be shuffled out.
