If there was a demand for a train like that and it was cost-efficient, the free market would've already provided it. It's messy business when you start subsidizing willy nilly. Just look at what happened back in the 19th century when railroads were in their infancy. The government thought it'd be great to have rails stretching all across the country so they pumped money into railroad companies to build them. The result was countless railroads that went absolutely nowhere and government-granted monopolies over the industry.
We already have Amtrak which collects larger subsidies than any other mode of transportation, repeatedly reports losses and gets very little traffic. The American taxpayer shouldn't be paying for a few people who like railroads. Air travel gets far smaller subsidies but is immensely more popular and still nets a profit. That has to represent something.

We voted for a "bullet train" here in California. It's supposed to be a 2 and a half hour ride from LA to San Francisco which usually takes like 6 hours. I'm all for it, maybe it'll reduce traffic on the freeways. I don't know when they're going to starting building it though :l
