Mistborn Game Announced

News | March 30, 2012 8:14 am

Author Brandon Sanderson announced via his blog that his popular fantasy universe brought to life in The Mistborn Trilogy will finally be meeting the video game medium in the form of Mistborn: Birthright, an Action RPG that will take place hundreds of years before the events of the novels. Fans of the series will be pleased to know that you will be able to play as a Mistborn and experience the brilliant magic of Allomancy.

"In short, we're hoping to do a fun, fast-paced, action game with some RPG elements, cool Allomancy effects, and some (hopefully) killer dialogue. That last part is my job, as I'll be writing the story and most (if not all) of the game's dialogue."

-Sanderson

A big gamer himself, Sanderson goes on to describe how he only intended to go back to the Mistborn universe in a different medium such as a video game and that he had been approached by multiple developers but eventually chose the lesser known studio Little Orbit, creators of the Sherlock Holmes titles.

"Their pitch materials were good and very persuasive. But the final thing that convinced me they were right came when we sat down and talked about the type of game we would make. Not only were they eager for me to be involved in the story, our discussions of what would make an awesome Mistborn game were synergistic and exciting. They envisioned the game the same way I always had."

Well here's to hoping that development continues to go well. I for one will be keeping my eye on this game. I'm actually reading the trilogy right now and just about finished with book two. I can see the concept of Allomancy translating well into a video game. For those who are not familiar, the magical powers of Allomancy allows for the "burning" (or use) of ingested metals or alloys, thereby enhancing various physical and mental capacities. For example, an Allomancer burning Tin is able to enhance all five of their senses and one who burns Pewter is able to greatly enhance their physical capabilities. There are various types of Mistings, who can only burn one type of metal and Mistborns have the ability to burn multiple types of metal making them elite.

Yes. I've been enjoying them thoroughly. The fast paced story sucks you in pretty quickly and Allomancy, the magic system, is fairly straightforward and easy to comprehend. And since it's only the three volumes, you know you won't have to devote a lot of time to finishing the series unlike longer series like The Wheel of Time which Sanderson is actually in the process of finishing the final book of since Robert Jordan's widow asked him to after Jordan passed.
