Nope, you need the credit card just in case you purchase something online.

heres youre answer. its used as a backup, you HAVE to put one in, but it wont do anything. usually, what they do w/ the credit card, is if you put in, say, a 15$ itunes card, and the go and buy 18$ worth of stuff, the extra 3 would be charged to the card, or you can redeem another money card. itll give you the option of either one i believe.
but no, you HAVE to put down a credit card, just as a backup paying method. it most likely wont be used, but it has to atleast be there

My girlfriend has an iTunes account but she doesn't have a credit card (she hates them).. I'll ask her what she did and I'll get back to you.

I didnt need a credit card when I made my iTunes account. It might be different because im from Canada but, I made an account so I could get free apps and shit but if I click on something to buy it goes through all of the credit card sign up but I just cancel all of the credit card shit and it goes back to my account.

You don't need a credit card. The only beal reason you need a credit card is if A) You buy stuff with it. or B) You use Itunes credit and your purchase goes over what credit you have left.
