Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid delayed a vote on the Protect IP Act (Pipa) scheduled for Tuesday.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith then said his panel would not consider the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) until a compromise was reached.
The decisions follow protests by online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, and thousands of other websites, which went "dark" in protest for 24 hours earlier this week.
"In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday's vote on the PROTECT IP Act," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, said in a statement on Friday.

I understand the concept of using regulations to attack monopolies like Google. It is like Standard Oil and such. It felt good at first until the company simply owned EVERYTHING (funny, because isn't that similar to what Occupy protests? 1% controlling 99%? Well that is kind of what big interwebz monsters like Google do). However, SOPA and PIPA are disgusting pieces of legislation that are left to FAR too much interpretation. I know that most acts of Congress are left vague for future interpretation, but this is pushing it way over the edge. The internet is endless, and does not belong to America to control and regulate. If you can't handle the pirates, don't swim in the water, right? Megaupload already has a new IP http://109.236.83.66/ that they intend to have up and fully functional soon. The Internet ALWAYS wins. (I'm breaking the rules of the Internet here, but) when people like Anonymous go and do what they did yesterday, crashing 10 government websites in a matter of minutes, it just further proves that you cannot possibly hope to control the internet with a bunch of stupid laws.
