hooking up laptop to TV

So I got this new thing for my laptop and I would like to project it onto my TV so I can have a 42" screen instead of my laptop screen which I think is 12" So I was wondering what kind of cable I would have to buy to do this? I am sure there is something out there, but I do not know what it is.

It depends on the ports of your tv. My Olevia has a VGA port. This is one of the formats used for monitors. My Macbook Pro has a DVI, or maybe a min-DVI port. I use a cable that came with my mac and a dvi to vga converter and then it can work with the VGA port on my tv. There might be alternatives if your tv doesn't have a VGA port, but I wouldn't know them.

Also, if you have Windows Media center, you can run it through your Xbox 360.

I've never been able to get media center to work properly on 360. I've just about given up on the entire process.

If you TV doesn't have a VGA/DVI port, look around on your laptop for a video out port (It will either look like a spot to plug one of those Yellow RCA cables, or an S/Video port). Get the cable for whichever one your laptop has, connect it to on open RCA/S-Video port on your TV, and there you go! You might have to configure the video out options through the laptop, but you should be all set.
