At what point in FFXIII can you not go back to do the missions?

Yeah just enjoy the journey, there isn't much point or advantage in going back until after you've completed the game anyway.
A "thing" happens towards the very end that will let you travel back easily, so don't sweat it.

just enjoy the game. the only thing you should really worry about is to get every treasure sphere, more specifically the ones that have the elemental rings in them, and even more specifically: if you get an accessory that says "[insert element] ring", KEEP IT. otherwise you'll be fine. there ARE areas which you won't be able to return to, which is pretty much all of the areas prior to chapter 11, but all the sidequests take place in the areas after chapter 10 anyways so it doesn't matter.
in the future though, ask/talk about anything FFXIII related in the FFXIII thread:

i check that thread whenever there are new posts (and so does pretty much everyone else that has replied in this thread) so you'll always be helped
