Elder Scrolls V to Use New Engine
For those of you who are unaware, the three games mentioned above were all programmed using the same engine; a game engine is the foundation of what a game can and can't do. The most popular one that comes to mind is the Unreal Engine which powers Unreal Tournament, among many others. These three particular games use what is known as the Gamebryo engine; a remarkable piece of software that gave these sprawling worlds life. It is also rather old as far as software and games are concerned, and quite broken, as I'm sure we've all experienced.
Well, Skyrim was originally believed to use a heavily modified version of Gamebryo, but that is not the case. Bethesda's Community Manager, Nick Breckon, stated that Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is being built using an "all-new" engine, saying "...the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic."
Not much else is known about the engine itself at this time, but I for one am quite happy that we are moving away from Gamebryo and onto bigger and better things. Hopefully the software will be fully tested and as glitch-free as possible. I've wanted a while for the next Elder Scrolls, I will wait longer for a game that isn't broken.
