My big thing is I don't understand what DNF is supposed to offer in this day and age.
Originally, George Broussard and his team at 3D Realms were going to make the most cutting-edge FPS type game they could, with the newest engine, tons of tweaks, yadda yadda. This is why the title had so many iterations and development chewed through potential game engines so fast.
The other thing is, back in the day when gamers were playing Blake Stone and Commander Keen, Duke Nukem represented a big middle finger to political correctness and paid blatant fan service to its core demographic.
Now here we are in 2010, and the state of the games industry is in an entirely different place. They could do DNF on the latest version of the Crytek Engine and they'd still not be "cutting edge".
On top of that, the Duke's trademark attitude and machismo are more a goofy anachronism at this point than anything else. Having the enemy be policemen that are also pigs? C'mon man, there are a ton of games out there where you can slaughter realistic styled police from either "side" of the law.
It was a big deal to be able to interact with background objects back then, and even more so to be able to tip a stripper and get a quick peep show, but nowadays we have destructible environments, relatively good AI and processing power for tons of objects and NPCs with physics behind them, not to mention full nudity in a lot of games.
What exactly is it Duke Nukem Forever could possibly offer anyone at this point? I feel like Gearbox has as good a chance as anyone of making a decent game out of whatever was left of the 3DR debacle, but I just can't figure out why they want to in the first place.
