Disk Drive problem?
08/04/13 8:23 pm | #1
Hey everyone, I've been having a problem with my Xbox 360. The disk drive doesn't seem to register my games. I cleared the memory cache, I took my pen drive out, I restarted it, cleaned a little bit of it with a cotton swab but it keeps acting up. I really don't have money to send it for repair. Any advice?

It can be a dirty lens. Xbox Disk Drives tend to give out after a while, it took mine 3 years to give out and the replacement has been fine ever since. If you don't want to send it in take it apart yourself and see if you can clean it.

If it's a slim it's a common problem. I think Xbox charges $55 to replace/repair whatever.
My suggestion is to complain to them about it if you're out of warranty and it's a slim. A-holes need to extend the warranty for that like they did with the RROD on the fat 360s...

Thanks guys, I'll probably let it sit a bit after trying to clean it. It's lasted about 5 years, just been using gold on it for almost 3.

You can always try to replace the lens or even the whole drive, replacing the drive requires some knowledge on computers though but it's not really hard at all.

That's true but I don't know anything much on that. I might look around in Maine and see if we've got any places that specialize in such a thing.

Honestly, a lot of the time it is just a worn out belt in the drive. It is an easy fix and a cheap part depending on which drive you have. You say you've had this console for 5 years, so I'm assuming it is a phat console. What does it do? Does it have trouble opening at all? Without a disc in it, open it up while vertical and then try opening it while horizontal. If it has trouble opening without a disc in either orientation, it could be a very simple fix.
Also, What message do you get? Does it just sit there saying reading and then OPEN TRAY? Do you get a pop-up with an error code? Does it finally work after a while of opening and closing? The more info you give me, the better I can help. Honestly, a dead laser is one of the rarest reasons for disc drive failure.

Yes, it's one of the white fat xbox 360s. It worked for a while of ejecting and opening the tray over and over. Now it doesn't seem to work at all. It just sits there with the "Open Tray" thing, no error code or anything.

No problem with the tray not opening either on its side or upright?

Also, which of these drives matches the shape of your disc tray?
