DeathSpank!

So... does anyone here have this yet? I was saving MS points to buy it when it first came out but it's 1200 and not 800 so now I have to wait until I can get more.

For those who don't know, it's an action-RPG or "hack n slash" but with a lot of humour and some light puzzles--think Diablo-meets-Monkey Island.

Speaking of Monkey Island, DeathSpank is designed by the main dude responsible for the first two MI games, Ron Gilbert. It's developed by HotHead who did the two episodes of Penny Arcade On the Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness. The official website is here if you want to read more.

Apart from how much I love hack n slash gameplay and picking up tons of awesome loot, the wacky humour looks pretty good. This game is aggressively silly with absurd items and enemies like evil chickens. The main quest is supposed to be about 15 hours, and then there are a ton of side quests to do. In what I feel is a stupid decision, there is no multiplayer over Live, but there is local co-op.

Fans of Diablo, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2, Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, and pretty much any kind of hack n slash and/or funny game should give it a try. I played the trial and I have to say the writing is extroadinary.. It's amazing. If you like hack and slashes the gameplay is quite good too. The achievements also look quite easy. If I can manage to come up with 1200 points, this is number 1 on my list of to-buys.

And for Monkey Island fans, it's written by the same guy.

Yea I was also checkin this out on the dashboard but havent picked it up yet seein as I have a ton of arcade games I have yet to play. Ill wait for someone on here to give their review before I make my final decision on the purchase, or wait until a deal.

Looked over the chevos and they dont look bad and it has avatar unlockables but 1200 blahhh, game sparked my interest

Yea 1200 is a bit much for a game that didnt get much hype/was overlooked

Turns out I was able to get it, so get it I did and started playing right away.

The combat is fast and fun. There's a neat mechanic where you have 4 slots to equip that are the 4 face buttons, so you can put in 4 different weapons, and the game gives you a multiplier when you alternate your attacks in-between them.

For instance, you may have an axe that does 400 physical and 50 fire damage, and a hammer that does 250 physical and 100 ice. Instead of just junking everything that isn't the best, you alternate your attacks between them and get the benefits of them all (in this case, DoT from fire and slowing from ice) and the multiplier more than makes up for any differences in damage.

Using this mechanic well, you can thwomp monsters way bigger than you. It's quite fun.

Also, as Chubaca mentioned, it has Avatar Awards. There is a dragonling pet you unlock very early in the game (i'm not even sure what i did to unlock it), and then there is a Unicorn Poop t-shirt once you beat the first boss. You unlock a male and female version at the same time.

As far as Achievements, the game has 3 difficulty levels and apparently you can get Achievements on any including easy. You will have to beat the game and complete 50 side quests, but everything else should come during normal gameplay.

I think it was kind of dumb of them to price it at 1200 points--it is definitely worth it, but it's less of an impulse buy at that price.
