I’m back again with another family friendly game review, this time for Ben 10 Alien Force Vilgax Attacks. This game is based on the hit Cartoon Network animated series Ben 10 Alien Force. It is an action/platformer with a few puzzles thrown in for good measure. You take control of Ben Tennyson and the various aliens of the Omintrix to thwart Vilgax’s attempt to take over the Earth and other planets in the galaxy with the Null Void Projector.
First, let me say that I found this game very enjoyable, despite its very simplistic gameplay: It reminded me of the old school beat ‘em ups of my youth. The controls are easy to learn, and if are looking for a game that is easy to pick up and play, then this is the one for you. Your moveset with Ben consists of basic light and heavy attacks using the X and Y buttons respectively. You can pull off more advanced combos and special moves using the RT along with the light and heavy attacks. The aliens on the other hand are quite different; they also have similar attack moves to Ben’s, but they have their own specific moves that belong to just them. A good example would be Humogasaur; he has a devastating shoulder charge that is perfect for getting rid of a large number of enemies. Other alien moves are the ability to glide for short distances with Big Chill, the ability to make clones of yourself with Echo Echo to fight with and use to press pressure plates.
The graphics on this game are pretty good, and they compliment the animated series very well. The use of bright colors and light and dark areas gives the game a true Saturday morning animated cartoon feel. My only issue with the game is the sound. Mouth movements are not in sync with the voices, which is a pet peeve of mine. The other sound effects in the game are decent, but could have been better. All of the cast members from the television show lend their voices to their characters in the game.
Last, but not least: The achievements. They are as easy as they come; not quite Avatar The Burning Earth easy, but pretty close. If you play your cards right, and have a little patience, 600+ gamerpoints can be had in just the first level alone. All in all in about 5 to 6 hours you can easily raise your achievement score by 1000 points. I give this game a 7 out of 10 just because I’m also a fan of the animated series.
