Hey guys, I realize we have alot of kids on here who aren't even out of high school, but I know they are some older....er....wiser folks as well. I'm curious if any of you have any sort of Computer Science degree and, if so, what do you do with it?

I have a BA in an unrelated field right now and I'm sick and tired of not making any $$ in my paychecks. I am considering going back to school for either A) some type of degree related to game development/design or B) A Masters in Computer Science.

I know that if I go for the CS degree, I'll need a TON of math and science classes before I can even apply for the Masters program. I am willing to do this if I can find an occupation I could hold with that degree that I would really like. I'm investigating just what I could do with a Masters in Computer Science, because frankly, I have no clue. All I know is that I love computers. I was building my own computers when I was 18 or 19 and I love nothing more than sitting down and figuring out computer software and languages.

I still don't know much about the gaming design school option, but I am trying to check out what types of programs are available out there and what I could do with my skills after graduation.

Does anyone have any experience in these areas at all?

Well, I have a minor in English so English isn't the problem. I do understand I'm going to have to take a crap load of math and science, just to get to the point where I can apply for the CS program. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it or not.

What kinds of things can you do with a CS degree? Can I be a game developer/designer with that degree?

Well I've been doing research over the last few days on the degrees in the gaming field. There are two schools in my city (Houston) that have a good reputation that I can afford, however if I got the degree I would have to move to Austin to get a job, probably. I am also hearing that it's a hard field to get into and that even with a gaming degree (Game Design or Art Design), you have to start in the entry level jobs (Marketing, Customer Service) and work your way up. Eeek. Not sure I want to move and not sure I want to lower myself to the Customer Service areas if I spend all this time and money on a masters degree. So now I am back to looking at the Masters in Computer Science. At least I would have a shot at getting into the gaming industry with it, but I could also just work in my home town in any sort of industry and bring home a healthy paycheck. I also really like graphic design, web design, and web commerce. Perhaps something like that would work too.

Man, I hate making big decisions....especially ones that are going to effect the rest of my life :D

I have a Bachelors in Computer Science and an Associates in Network Administration. My profession: Electrician. Though I am not in my degree field I still do a lot of computer work at my job. The degrees also got me more money for being more flexible in being able to do more advanced work. Some of the different fuse and transformer boxes that I build have multimeters and such built into them that need to be programmed through computers. So though I am not in the exact field I wanted. I still use my skills every day at work.

When you say you know you will have to take a lot of math classes... you have no idea. I never knew there were so many types of math. But Math always was one of my favorite subjects, so I found it fun. Most of the first year of my bachelors was Math classes.
