Hey, I really need to up my ACT to a 30, ( from a 28 ) and was just curious if any of you guys have any helpful tips. I don't have a prep book, but I really need to get one.

I currently have:
32 Reading

25 Math
25 English

I've taken it twice and can't seem to get the math and english up.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

I got a 34 :)!

But to be honest it's not really something you can study for and expect to do well. My tip to getting a higher score would be to do your better subjects first leaving the remainder of the time to work on the ones that you don't know as well.

When I took it (like 6 years ago) we had the WHOLE booklet in front of us and we could work on whichever sections we wanted.

Guess that's now how they do it anymore, lol. Man do I feel old now.

Yeah, I wish they gave it to us that way. We're timed on each of the 4 sections. We HAVE to do English first, next Math, then Reading, and finally, Science. That would make it a lot easier; I could knock reading and science out, leaving more time for the other two.

Well, the only thing I can say is to go through everything and then just go through it all again when you're finished and make sure that you answered everything right.

Prep books can help. They help get you used to the structure and mechanics of the test more than anything. You might want to try to pick one up at Half Price Books. I have one leftover from when I went through the admissions process... I don't believe I used it much; I only really prepped for the SAT. Unfortunately shipping to Alabama would probably be fairly expensive. I'd be willing to give it to you though.

You might also want to try the SAT. Some people do better on one test or the other for whatever reason.

I found the College Confidential forum to be an invaluable resource during the admissions process. Its ACT Prep forum might be a good place to look for tips. Just don't be discouraged by some of the insane people. There are plenty of people whining about not getting 36s in there.

Well that just seems like bullshit if you ask me... As long as you have time left you should get to use all that time.

Wow, I would be so happy if I made a 36, heck, even a 30. A 28 is a fairly respectable score, right? I know it won't get me into the Ivy's, but most state schools.

Yeah, a 28 is great. It's the 91st percentile. (ACT National Percentiles)

College Confidential just attracts a ton of Ivy-obsessed kids who put waaaay too much stock in standardized tests.

Yeah, I just need to get a Prep book and study. I was suuuper disappointed in math, I've always been a good math student in the classroom. I thought my score in it would be over a 30. I've never been strong in English, though.
