I keep getting that message too, and i get equally as pissed as the next time I get it...I have to restrain myself from throwing it out the window

Believe me when I say that the noise you are hearing is a very bad thing. In most cases, it will eventually will scratch up your game discs, won't open and then result in a complete EPIC FAIL! Either with your drive or the dreaded RRoD.
My original 360 made those noises. It ate my games. Then I'd have to "persuade" it to open the disc drive. And eventually it just died completely.
If you are under warranty still, get it fixed now, would be my advice. If not, play it until it dies.
At the moment, my "newest" 360 makes a noise upon start-up. I've determined it to be a faulty fan. One of the bearings is shot. But once it gets going it's alright. Of course I have the stand with the extra fans and the backing with the extra fans, so I have yet to eliminate the actual fan that makes the noise. Hopefully it isn't one of the two internal fans.

If you are still worried about it don't leave discs in it while your not playing (and dont go to dashboard either just eject)
