It was only a matter of time, but a report on Gamespot today revealed that Sony and Microsoft are in talks to bring a Blu-Ray player to the Xbox 360. According to the article, it wouldn't just be a stand-alone player, but potentially a higher end sku that included the Blu-Ray player built in. I find that scenario unlikely, as that would require every Xbox 360 title to possibly be made in both formats, or both versions (DVD and Blu-Ray) put on the same disk. Ain't gonna happen, but a stand alone player could easily be introduced at E3 or PAX.

This would put the 360 a year back... Like next to no games would come out because of conversion issues. Developers would have to dump the code, and reformat it.

Stand alone I could see coming. I just don't see MS going Blu-Ray format entirely this generation.

I have an article going up tomorrow on GamingNexus that covers this topic. Has lots of good info in it.

I definately don't see a new SKU coming out with BLU Ray built into it. They weren't "planning" a HD DVD SKU, so why would they do one for BLU Ray? I put the planning in quotes, as it was rumored, but never came to fruition. What we got instead was a Green Console, that was in essence, a PRO console with the new Chips and DVD Drives. If you think about it, MS would lose many customers in the long run over this. "Guess what, we're going to make another new SKU, with BLU Ray technology built in. So, all of you 360 owners already are going to get shafted because all the new games will only play on it or you'll be forced to wait longer because we have to have 2 different versions of the game made for one console." Yeah, not going to happen. They will just make a stand alone, like the HD DVD Player, and shaft all of us on the price.

Whats even funnier in my eyes, is that now that the so called 'war' is over, MS HD DVD players are $50 at Game Crazy stores and HD DVD's are cheaper to buy used at Hollywood Video than that of regular DVD's. I just look at it this way though, the HD DVD Player is just a bit more expensive DVD player now. Which is how I've always looked at it. I have a HD TV and a Toshiba HD DVD Player, and I only have 6 HD DVD's; and I don't even watch those HD DVD's very often. I do however watch a lot of DVD's. And on that HD DVD player, matched in with my HD TV, the movies look phenomenal. So, basically, I have a $200 DVD player. Which, is about the same price I paid for my 5 year old regular DVD player I have in the living room. Wow this post got really long...lol

A Microsoft rep has been quoted in saying that is "not at all" the case, and Microsoft will "remain focused on the games" for the console, not its movie playback capabilities.

"There are no plans to introduce Blu-ray," said the spokesperson. Of course, Microsoft reps aren't the most honest of people. I can't see a built in drive, but I can definitley see an add-on.
