They didn't think it was a hoax in the beginning when they thought the kid was missing but when the kid was found in the attic and they questioned him and asked why he was hiding in the attic he said it was apart of the show which lead them to believe it was a hoax

Their own kid busted them out on Larry King Live. The father's reaction was saying "Man!" The mother's reaction was a hesitation and then saying "no...."
I felt for the kid too, but this kid's dad has been trying unsuccessfully to get back on tv, and this was just what they needed for another 5 minutes of fame.
I found it hilarious that Falcon answer "Um, you said, uh, that we did this for the show..." when they asked why he didn't come out when he was being called by everyone.
