my friend opened up the box and replaced the motor to the cd drive and cleaned the laser and everything and it worked fine.

Yep, as far as MS goes Ive never had a problem gettin my console fixed through them in a timely and free manor. Id usually get it back within 2 weeks total and thats including them shippin me the box to put it in and me sending it back to them. As soon as u open up ur console though ur warranty is voided so ur better off figuring it out urself. I fixed my original xbox once when my disc drive went out for like a total of 20 bucks after buyin a new one off ebay. Ive never personally had a RRoD(knock on wood), only hardware failures.
