I believe there are tons of more talented metal guitarists out there and his solo's just don't really do anything for me. You'd be insane to say he is a better player than Paul Gilbert, Muhammed Suicimez(sp?) or James Malone. They are not only better technically but their phrasing in their solos and their songwriting is much better.
His tone sucked (I'm a guitarist/tone freak, so yes a i bitch about tone) as well.
He did write some badass riffs though, i'll give him that.

That's true he did pave the way for other heavy more mainstream(not super mainstream mind you) bands.
I'm just more of a fan of emotion in solos, not super fast pentatonic scales.
