My suggestion would be to add a new icon that shows an "open" envelope, with papers sticking out, so it's much more distinct if there's a new post or not. If you don't really understand what i'm talking about, I can supply pictures as reference.

Hey guys, The new post icons seem a little confusing to me. If a thread has a new post, the little envelope picture is Blue. But once there are more than 20 posts or 200 views of the topic, the envelope turns red. Now, if a thread would normaly have that red envelope, and then gets a new post? How would you know if there's a new post? Would the icon turn blue again? Because from what i've seen, it stays red...

I always go by the "N" icon indicating new posts.
