I'm pretty sure almost everyone knows about this, but I didn't see any topic about it so I'm posting it.

Metallica has now finished recoding their ninth album, titled, Death Magnetic. Production for the album has been going on since 2006, but because of Metallica's new recording style, they wrote everything before they started recording, resulting in the recordings just being finished. The album is set for release on September 12, 2008 in most countries.

The "style" of the album is supposed to be more like their old albums, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All. They said that not many fans liked the new "solo-less" type of music that was on Load, Reload, and St. Anger. So Metallica decided to revert back to their heavier, more metalish feeling.

The official track list is here: with the single, "The Day That Never Comes" to be released early on rock Band sometime in August:
1. That Was Just Your Life
2. The End of the Line
3. Broken, Beaten & Scared
4. The Day that Never Comes
5. All Nightmare Long
6. Cyanide
7. The Unforgiving lll
8. The Judas Kiss
9. Suicide & Redemption
10. My Apocalypse

The entire album will be available as DLC for GH3 the day of the album's release, and will also be one of the first DLC packs for GH:WT.

The current Metallica line-up is as followed:
James Hetfield: Lead Vocals, Rythm Guitar
Kirk Hammett: Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals
Lars Ulrich: Drums, Percussion
Robert Trujillo: Bass, Backing Vocals

I personally am VERY excited for this album, and will be visiting Best Buy right after school on Sept. 12th.

If there was an "undecided" option, that would be me. I haven't bought a Metallica album since the Black Album. Metallica changed alot since then.

I'll be optimistic and say "Yes" I am looking forward to this album. If it is anywhere near the caliber "Master of Puppets" I will be happy.

Ya, as a reply to all three of you, It's supposed to be more along the lines of Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All. Which is great, because Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger were all pretty bad. IMHO.

I can't stand Metallica music anymore, nor can I stand Lars complaining about people stealing their music online yet he thinks its great that they'll have it in GH3. Then again that's because he'll be getting payed more than he should, I really hated St.Anger and lost all respect for the band when it was released and I feel this album will let me down again as it's getting so much hype. I'm just going to download this album when it's released.

Oye...Captain....let me retort on this, being a rather huge Metallica fan.

Lars hasn't bitched about the downloading of music for quite some time. Unfortunately, he got crucified because someone had to step up to the plate when it was flat out being stolen. Yes, it was ugly, but the RIAA needed a huge face. Moving along, though....that was a few years ago when I was still in college.

Load, Re-Load, and St. Anger were not good albums. I completely agree with that. However, I have heard "Cyanide" finally and it has given me hope. The album sounds a lot like "...And Justice For All" so here's hoping that it lives up to this hype that's surrounding. Personally, I think they could have picked a better name for the album (Death Magnetic just doesn't have a ring to it) but I'll learn to deal with it.

As for why Lars isn't bitching about the album being DLC for Guitar Hero? Well, anyone who downloads the album on XBL, they will consider that an album sale, considering that the cost of that will be similar to that of the actual CD.

I'm happy for the Metallica and GH fans out there.
Personally, I don't give a damn yet but I will be looking forward to Guitar Hero: Metallica just because GH:Aerosmith turned out to be great fun, and I enjoy slamming coloured notes in the RB Metallica track pack. Blackened freakin' owns.

I enjoyed their first three albums a lot and their fourth was decent. If they can write songs of that nature again and perform them well, then I say good for the Metallica fans out there.

All that being said, there are umpteen more talented & creative metal bands out there right now, even in just the sub-subgenre of thrash metal, so I ultimately think Metallica should make do with living off royalties re-releasing music from when they were good, and stop making themselves look bad and stealing attention & money from bands that actually deserve it.

I don't know Load and Re-Load were way better than St.Anger IMO. As for Lars and the whole RIAA thing it doesn't matter how long ago it was he didn't need to bitch about it, if you look at it a certain way if someone DL one of their albulms and liked what they heard they might actually go out and purchase the album as well as their previous works. I'm sorry but when lars became the posterboy for the RIAA he became everything Metallica wasn't about back when they were good and turned away alot of fans along with me, that's when I lost all respect for him he's almost like how Gene Simmons is now with him trying to copyright the moneybag symbol. All they are trying to do is make more money because they aren't as talented or as popular as they were in the 80s. I'm not trying to start any arguments here I'm just stating my opinion I know how things tend to get out of hand here so while reading this please don't think I'm trying to change anyones feelings against the band.

Load's good songs = Hero of the Day, Ain't My Bitch, Bleeding Me, Mama Said

ReLoad's good songs = Fuel....that's about it.

St. Anger = Frantic.

I guess I just look at it from both side's of the argument and I understand why Lars did what he did. His argument was simple: If I walk into a store, pick up a CD, and walk out without paying for it, I'm stealing. Downloading a song (excuse me....backing up my songs that I don't own) is the same thing. We have ALL done it, myself included.....but some have abused that right. I have nothing against someone downloading a few songs to hear a new band and such.

However, we all know that the percentage of people who use downloading songs that will go out and buy an album is probably about one percent. If you continue to trudge along, downloading songs, without getting caught....you're going to continue to do it.

I agree with most of the arguments on both sides of the court, and I feel they actually bring up an even more important issue: you're just mincing over how you're going to buy them new cars.

Why don't you actually find some good, creative, new music from good, creative, new bands out there? There are probably some great local acts in your area that you don't know about because they haven't been shoved down your throat yet.

When it is your friend's band and they sweat & bleed their hearts and souls out in a studio to get out a disc, you don't have to bother waxing philosophical or mincing words online and debating piracy--you either buy stuff to support them without it being "charity," or you decide the content isn't good enough to be worth your time and money so you don't.

You aren't doing Metallica any favors or disservices by buying or not buying their crap from Best Buy or Amazon.com, the band are on a nice label and have people to crunch numbers for them. If you do like them a lot and you DO want to support them, then go see them in person, buy a shirt, and chat with them after the show. This is the only real interaction a band will have with you and your money.

I pirate a hell of a lot of music myself. I feel the same way you do sometimes--I want to listen to something so I grab it. It turns out to not be very good so I don't bother buying a real hard copy. It seriously doesn't matter to anyone but suits whether or not this is "wrong" and/or punishable. What matters is, if you aren't willing to pay money to legitimately "own" it per our gluttonous free market ways, why are you willing to take the time & energy to download it and listen to it? If you don't like it, delete it. If you like it, grow a pair and buy it if the band needs the money.

If their label is flying them to meet & greets with foreign celebrities in Argentina, they probably don't need their cut of your $18 that went at the CD.

If their label is begging them to come help put up posters for another group's show tomorrow and in return they will help you pay for gas so you can catch up with one of their bands on "tour" one city over, then it would be cool of you to show up, rock out with them, tell them you enjoyed the show, and buy an over-priced t-shirt. Assuming you enjoyed the music.

If you don't enjoy the music, then fuck it, just go download it and burn a copy so you have it for your collection, who the hell cares.

I can tell you right now, Metallica doesn't need the money. It's up to you how you want to deal with things like this but don't let yourself be deceived and, even more importantly, don't deceive yourself.
