I picked up a free rental last week for my birthday at Hollywood Video - Lost Planet. I just wanted to share with you a really sweet gaming moment I will remember for a while.
I slowly made my way through the first 7 levels of the game getting all of the letter coins for every level and really getting into the great graphics and surround sound.
I had 5 days to get as far as I could before I had to return the rental. I made sure as I went through each level I would take my time and find all of the coins along the way.
Well, last night I made my way through Mission 8, picking up all of the coins along the way. The Mission 8 Boss had a big GAB-VR tank looking vehicle and a few other Mini-VR's running around. I picked up a nice little VR for myself along the way and equipped it with a Gatlin Gun on the right and a shiny new EM Laser on the left.
I noticed a bunch of other empty VR's sitting around on ledges, and thought I would never need them. 30 seconds later, I was tapping my B button rapidly ejecting from an exploding VR. I did manage to pull of a few quick shots with my EM Laser pulling about 15% off of the Boss and killing off most of the mini-VR's in one shot.
I ran as quick as my shooting taget butt could run to the closest VR I could find. I got hit outside of my VR once along the way and watched my energy drain very fast. All around me, I heard explosions and mechanical clanks and bangs, just as I jumped in my shiny new VR and with 2 new Gatlin Guns fully loaded. Realizing I couldn't hurt this Boss very much with Gatlins I scurried around trying to find a bigger weapon to pick up.
I was about 8 minutes into it now constantly jumping and shooting and adjusting my aim. The Boss was down to his last 25% health. I was so into a zone I didn't even realize I one of my Grenade Launchers had ran out of ammo. My VR energy was once again in the Danger Zone. In a desperate act of insanity I decided to jump out of my VR and make a run for the closest weapon I could find instead of risking it blowing up on me.
I heard the Boss transforming into Driller mode behind me in my surround speakers as I ran what felt like a mile to that glowing blue weapon of saving grace hoping that I wasn't about to get ran over.
I was hitting the B button about 50 yards before I even got the BigAzzGun in hopes I could use the Force and pull it into my hands. Louder and Louder the drilling sound was getting. Just then, I was dropping my tiny little Machine Gun and picking up a Grenade Launcher the size of a truck. All in one quick move, I spun the camera, tapped one of the buttons that spun me 90 degrees around twice, and squeezed the right trigger.
***BOOOOOOOOOMMMMM*** Not realizing the Boss was right in my face, the grenade launcher exploded instantly in front of me and knocked me back into the wall I was up against. In an unbelievable instant I realized I was standing up looking at a twitching pile of Boss Machina lying in front of me and the words that I just completed Mission 8 came up on my screen.
It was the greatest moment I have had in gaming in quite a while and my wife was even there to laugh at me as I jumped up and laughed hysterically. What a nice way to end my gaming moment in Lost Planet. I returned the game last night to the rental store. I think I am going to have to rent this game one more time to finish up the final few missions and see what the ending has in store for me!
