Is Final Fantasy 13 The Last Hope for JRPGS?

Hey XBA

We all know that the WRPG's have sold a lot better than their japanese counterparts and the average critcal score of the wrpgs have outdone the jrpgs.

However, FF13 is a juggernaut in the world of RPGS period and has hype aplenty. Is FF13 the final hope for showing this gen of gamers that JRPGS can bring the awesome experiences that WRPG's have to the masses?

I personally think JRPGS are in a critical state (at least in the US) and FF13 is going to be a massive hit or miss for the survival of jrpgs coming ashore.

Your thoughts?

And we need another game from the crew that did Eternal Sonata

Just one mans opinion.

FF13 has gotten a LOT of attention from virtually every media outlet in the world. If any JRPG can sway some of the general public from JRPGS, it WOULD be that behemoth. The graphics are beastly and might possibly set a new standard for rpgs. But if the combat and narrative cant keep pace, it will be another common jrpg for most.

Sadly, you might be right lady of the jrpgs, it may be a genre that is dying.

If a JRPG experimented with some true innovation for the genre (I'd love to see an open world do as you feel game ala fable 2) or produced a hero who isn't a 17 year old metrosexual stricken with temporary amnesia, maybe they can make a comeback.

i agree that the newer generations of gamers aren't likely to appreciate jrpgs as much as some of us veterans, but i don't exactly think innovation is completely necessary. i think it actually hurts the genre more often than not.

i mean... take older FF titles for instance. FF7 was a beautiful experience. FF8 wasn't really my cup of tea, but not really because they changed a whole lot. i just didn't care for the characters or the story, personally. FF9 was decent, from what i played.

then came the goofy crap. the soccer... the gamerchix wet dream FF, etc.
that's what ruined the series for me, personally.

i really enjoyed lost od, which wasn't innovative in my opinion.
i don't think innovation is going to necessarily save the genre. i just think they need better stories and characters. that's what i play jrpgs for. just my opinion.

when it comes to wrpgs, yeah, i've been enjoying them more than jrpgs. much more lately.
at this point it's either tons of action with minimal personality or minimal action with minimal personality.

@noah - I do think some less cliched writing and some more engrossing characters would help. But we all know FFT was the pinnacle of narrative in a FF ;p
(Obviously a personal and very debateable opinion, im a FFT fanboy, shame on me ha ha)

I used to think jrpg's were in trouble on the 360, especially after playing Enchanted Arms and Lost Odyssey.....UNTIL I discovered Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean IV, Blue Dragon, and Infinite Undiscovery. Final Fantasy XIII is my 2nd biggest game I'm looking forward to, next to Bayonetta. So, that being said, I don't think jrpg's are in trouble, I think they are just getting started.

@ krueger - I got TOTALLY distracted by your awesome sig. When I usto go laser tagging back in my younger days (im 26 now, so old lol) I used X as my call sign. A former buddy of mine went as zero (you get the idea). GO MM !!!

@noah - Yep, FFT was the debateable epitimy of FF glory.

@lady - yep, it would make you a nerd. lol. But nerdom is cool now anyways, so its a good thing. I STILL got my griever chain and rock it out from time to time. Like the commercials say, "its a nerds world"

JRPG's are a made for a niche audience and will always be around, I personally loved Magna Carta 2, the most recent jrpg to grace the 360, eternal sonata and LO were also decent, IU had its moments as well. FF will not hurt the genre but it certainly might sway a few people over who would of never tried otherwise.

I've played almost every nextgen RPG(still need to play eternal sonata and star ocean)

and i think they have all been good so far.

I think Final Fantasy is gonna be a huge HIT.
Especially since its now a cross-platform game.
If it is a miss. Plenty of JRPGS will come after.
