Guitar Hero II Patch
04/15/07 5:49 pm | #1
For those of you wondering, the patch that you received when you logged into Guitar Hero II recently fixes a whammy bar issue where it wasn't responding. There is still an issue with defective controllers, but those of you that felt it didn't respond properly should notice a difference.

What about dead consoles? I would usually not blame an update for a consoles death, but it was just after the GH2 update that I experienced by 3 red lights of death. I'm sure its coincdence, but after reading all the bricked consoles after the GHII update over at forums.xbox.com, i'm skeptical

If you do have GHII, please say no to the update, at least for a day or two until we see if MS or RedOctane or Activision pull the update or modify the update. Just trying to prevent more bricks (if this was even the cause at all, but too many complaints of bricked systems after this update)

Updates alone do not brick consoles (unless designed to smoke out hackers), they are strictly software related. Any bricked console after an update is complete coincidence. What COULD cause a console brick after an update is if the HDD or the disc-drive puke due to writing the code in a bad sector or stress of writing vs. just reading. Not to mention if you had a power surge between the last time you fired up your 360 and the next, which happened to be when the GH II update went in.
If there truly is something to this, expect Red Octane or MS to respond come Monday.

Oh, Z, I agree, however, with GHII, there is the USB controller that was plugged in. The update fixes whammy bar issues. Is this firmware sent to the usb controller? Not sure. I'm just letting others know my experience and keep adding that it may just have been coincidental, but really strange.

RedOctane admits to Guitar Hero II patch update issue:
Guitar Hero II publisher RedOctane has admitted that some users are experiencing problems with a patch released for the Xbox 360 version over the weekend.
The update, released on Saturday, was supposed to help users whose copies of the game were refusing to acknowledge input from the Xplorer controller's whammy bar.
However forum threads quickly sprang up on Xbox.com and the official Guitar Hero website complaining that the patch was followed immediately by system freezes and, in some cases, the dreaded ring of death - the only answer to which is returning the console to Microsoft.
For gamers whose consoles are now out of warranty, that could mean a significant charge from Microsoft in order to get it fixed.
RedOctane initially declined to comment, but this afternoon a spokesperson told Eurogamer: "We're aware of the problem and we're looking into it."
Given how quickly the last patch was released, it's probably safe to expect something in the near future. What will be interesting though is how the publisher intends to deal with customers who claim their consoles have been "bricked" by the update.

"Updates alone do not brick consoles"
I have to disagree with this statement. Remember the dashboard update that didn't check to see if the last update was applied and bricked consoles. MS did repair this free of charge. Software patches can brick hardware.
