Same here. I've done the glitch several times, and I never had to get on his "good side". I just simply gave him the scrap metal and did the glitch.
I don't know why, but we had problems with his. When I did it on my file I already had his trust so I didn't know if it would matter. We tried it on my buddies without gaining his trust and he would catch you stealing it back no matter how stealthy you were. I had on a stealth boy, got behind him quietly, it said hidden, I went in to grab them and it said" You have been caught stealing" every time.
But whenever I went back and gained his trust, using the alien power cells, it worked first shot. Its just, then after I took back the scrap metal the second time, I took back all of the power cells to get caught.
