First it was Blockbuster stating that they would be carrying only Blu-Ray when it came to Next Gen DVDs, then Warner Brothers made the jump to Blu-Ray, and now it looks like Best Buy, one of the largest retail stores in the world, is joining them. This news was taken from Blu-Ray.com:

Unattributed Quote:

Beginning in early March, retailer Best Buy will begin officially recommending Blu-ray as best choice for high definition movies to their customer base. Since the beginning of the format war, Best Buy has silently stood on the sidelines providing both the Blu-ray and HD DVD format for consumers to choose. Current sales data now shows that Blu-ray is their choice, and the retailer will soon carry the official stance that Blu-ray is best high definition format.

Brian Dunn, Best Buy's president and chief operating officer commented, "Consumers have told us that they want us to help lead the way. We've listened to our customers, and we are responding. Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray as the preferred format. Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them.

Best Buy will continue to stock a reduced amount of HD DVD players and movies, but the reduction in stock combined with the unified voice to support Blu-ray brings up questions as to how long those stocks will continued to be resupplied.

EDIT: Z Netflix also announced today they were pulling HD-DVD support

Not at all. What it means is that rumored projects, such as the Xbox 360 Ultimate, which was supposed to have an HD-DVD player built into it, are probably going to go through some tweaking.

It really doesn't mean much for current 360 users.

Means nothing for any Xbox 360 owner unless you bought the HD-DVD add on. If you have one of those, it will pretty much me useless here real quick. Expect Microsoft to announce a Blu-Ray add on sometime this year, possibly at GDC or E3...

That sucks, but honestly I never even considered investing in either until one went under. I have a friend who spent all this money on minidisks a few years back. That went well for him. Wasn't trying to get caught out like that.

You obviously have never seen either one in their glory. They are simply amazing to watch, as well as listen as their quality for both video and sound are flat out fantastic.

However, it really isn't for everyone. Those without an HDTV or even one that supports 1080p aren't going to need one.

Truthfully, I don't think Blu-Ray sticks around for too long. With the explosion of downloadable content on the horizon, it won't be a surprise if Blu-Ray is only around a few years and then disappears.

As for right now, it's a good thing that one format has finally beaten the other. People will now know what to buy when it comes to the Next-Gen format.

Both formats will be dead soon. Most people who buy DVDs see no reason to upgrade their collections to a more expensive format that doesn't provide much difference. Digital is the future.

I would bank on that; I can see an increase in Up-Converting DVD players. I have a Memorex DVD player that upconverts all my dvds to 1080P and they all look beautiful on my 65'' DLP. The best part: The Memorex UpScaling DVD player cost me fifty bucks. Here here for downloadable content. I would bet that in a few years we'll see less Blockbusters and more RedBox DVD vending machines and downloadable content. That's the way to go: Only rent a movie if I'm already out, or never leave the house to rent one. The lazy man wineth over all!!

It's official; Toshiba has announced they are stopping production of HD-DVD players and products. From NHK World News:

"Sources say Toshiba plans to stop producing HD-DVD players and recorders at its plant in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, and further development of the products.

"The plan will probably be officially decided at the company's board of directors extraordinary meeting early this week.

"Toshiba is expected to continue to sell HD-DVD products for a while, and announce support measures for users as soon as the decision is officially made."

Didn't see that one coming...
