Component or HDMI?

Ever since I finally upgraded to a HDTV a few months ago, I've been using the component jacks for my 360. So, my question is: do HDMI cables really make any difference, other than lightening your wallet by fifty bucks or more? Can any of you attest to this one way or the other?

Well I got an Elite and the last arcade I bought also had HDMI included, so it didn't cost me any extra. There is a difference, but it's so close, you most likely could only tell if you physically compared side by side. And even then...

I don't have surround sound hooked up, but from what I have been told the difference is bigger in the audio than the video.

For ease of hook up, HDMI is hands down the way to go. $50 better? I doubt it.

it all depends on ur tv. if ur tv is 1080p compatible i would use hdmi. if not. use component. hdmi is the only thing that will show a TRUE 1080p pic since it is fully digital

No dude....once you start playing on HDMI....you will want to play everygame again just see how it REALLY looks. DO HDMI, and after youve been using it for a while, plug them ol' component cables back in, and see how nasty the image is.....

you can catch a used xbox 360 HDMI cable for $20 at Gamestop, and they are always like new, cuz the people who trade them in, dont have the TV's for them.

ebay has 6 foot cables for like 8 bucks... just search xbox 360 HDMI cable, i bought one, works great

Yeah, I started with the pro bundle and have since upgraded to a 120gig HD but HDMI's didn't come with it. Thanks for all your input guys. I found one for 9.99 on ebay with free shipping.

yup. i worked at circuit city and had to take classes on this. hdmi does give u a better pic IF u have a tv that does 1080p. if u dont ur just wasting ur money. plus with the quality of tvs now the dif between 1080p and 1080i is not that great. the reall dif is in the processors. if u dont kno what im talkin about u almost def have a 60hz processor. if u had a 120hz processor u would def notice a dif.

so it all comes down to this. if ur tv is 1080p use hdmi. if it is 1080i. dont waste ur money

I work in video acquisition (giant satellite dishes bringing in feeds from space and such).

That's what I use for hooking up anything (in-wall wiring or not). 6' HDMI for $1.49.

Your Xbox is digital, the game is digital, your tv is digital, why would you ever want to convert to analog (component) if you didn't have to? Each time you do a conversion, you have loss, no matter how minimal. So, Digital to analog to send it via component and analog back to digital at the TV. Two conversions, two losses in quality, no matter how small.

Also, if component is your only choice (a pre-Elite-era 360) 1080p is still possible via component from your Xbox 360. You just have to ensure you TV accepts 1080p via component (most do not). My Sony does (XBR series Brava, not sure if the non-XBR Bravias do, though) and Vizio does as well. I have been told that some Toshiba models will, but I have no experience with that.

The main advantage of HDMI is the single cable for digital video and digital multi-channel audio. Also, HDCP. In fact, you HD DVD add-on will NOT do 1080p (at least in the past) via component or VGA to ensure copy protection at the highest quality settings. (This is why no BD or HD DVD player will do 1080p via component, it is purely about the DRM)
