It's Chocobo Breeding Time
Square Enix to appease fans with a future update enabling Chocobo breeding.
by Douglass C. Perry
June 1, 2006 - In a move to please the massive, vocal Final Fantasy XI community (now on PC, PS2 and Xbox 360), Square Enix today revealed endeavors to incorporate a Chocobo-raising feature in its next update, due later this summer.

The update gives players the chance to raise and breed Chocobos -- the ostrich-like creatures that have populated many a Final Fantasy game. Square explained that Chocobo raising requires nurturing over a two- to three-month period for a single creature, with some time spent every day to successfully rear a healthy one. First, you must find an egg, each of which is encoded with distinct DNA. Second, depending on rearing methods, players will see wild variations in their baby Chocobos, and they'll also be able to breed their Chocobos with other online players' Chocobos for even greater variation. You'll have to work with stable employees to raise them properly, and as they grow they'll require food when they're hungry and care when they're lonely.

An unnamed member of the Square development team offered these words to future Chocobo parents:

"The Chocobo raising feature is finally taking shape! I can see a Chocobo on my screen right now, growing rapidly from day to day. It seems we can finally fulfill the promises we made to everyone about this new feature! Soon we should also be able to provide screenshots and give even more detailed information about Chocobo raising. We are hard at work creating a system in which players can enjoy competing their Chocobos against each other--for example, to see which is the fastest We hope you enjoy this new feature and all the interesting possibilities it brings. We wish you all the best of luck in Vana'diel!"
