I usually open up the chat and then put it in the background, and check back in about 10 minutes to see if anyone has posted. I open the window back up, and I see that X number of people have already come into the room, asked if I was there, and left. If there was an option for it to make a "ding" whenever somone posts, it would be more convenient to talk to people in real time while browsing the site.

Our current chatbox is very cool, but I've got a suggestion. Would it be possible to make a dropdown option for there to be a "ding' noise whenever somone makes a post? (similar to AIM)

Okay, I'll see what I can do. This will be a little difficult to develop, but I'm looking into it.
EDIT: Another possibility would be some kind of site-wide chat. Basically, you'd be able to just chat in the regular chat, or you could also expand the chat box somewhere on the site ( between the content and the link bar for example ), so you could keep chatting as you went from page to page.

page-to-page chat, great idea man.

Yeah, I think that idea would probably be better. Possibly easier to code as well.

I'm looking heavily into both the site-wide chat, and the smilies. In order to get the smilies to work I will need to bend some web rules, but it's a rule that is bent often by many applications such as chat ones.

Site-wide seems like it would be pretty sweet.

Sorry for the bump, but is there any possibility for the site wide chat to be implimented? Just curious.

Yea, I'm still planning on doing it... I'm just having a hard time finding the time to get everything I want to do on Xbox America done.

Alright, sounds cool man. No rush on it, I was just curious if you were working on it or not

I'll be honest, the site-wide chat is going to be a major pain in the place where the sun don't shine to build. While I still can't have any sounds to inform you of when a person enters the chat, I've updated it so the title will always contain how many people are online. That way if you're using a tabbed browser and are surfing Xbox America in another tab, you can just glance at the title to see if anyone's entered.

Okay, as of right now, unless someone can persuade me otherwise, the site-wide chat is not going to happen. I realized it'd just be too big of a project and nuisance... at least at this point for such a small community.
However, there is now a popping noise whenever a new message is posted in the chat. An option to turn the sound off will have to wait until another day, as it is 1:30 am. The sound was made by own lips, lol.
