Actually when you get messages like "Go here for free Microsoft Points" and such, the person you got it from isn't really the scammer, but someone who has already fell for the phishing scam. Immediately after you give them your information, they have a program that runs, logs onto your account on Xbox.com and then sends that same message to all your friends and recent players.

The best thing you can do, when you get those messages, is send the poor sap a message telling him to change is .net password. You have a good amount of time after falling for one of these things, because the scammer has to manualy get on and change your password, it can't be done with a program.

As for this new type of scam, I doubt it is automated, seeing as it is all coming from the same account. I'm sure the account will be banned soon.
