You see, when the light from the sun hits the Ozone Layer, the O L acts as a prism and splits the light into the many colors of the light spectrum. Blue is the largest color, so it is the one we see most often, as in all day. As the sun goes down, the angle of light to where you are changes, which causes you to see the different colors, reds, purpleish, so on.
Also, if you are at sea, with no land in sight, you can see a "Green Flash' just as the sun sets completely. Green is the last color in the spectrum.

You can see the green flash over any area that is completely flat
