Yes, the American public has taken one on the chin by the gas companies. However, take a look at what people drive. Is it really necessary for mom to drive a Hummer and drop off the kids at school? We do it to ourselves and the gas industry is more than happy to allow us to continue to do it.
We should be way out in front with ethanol technology. There is no reason why a country like Brazil can out produce us in ethanol production and usage. There is no reason why Germany and Europe is so far ahead of us in CNG usage in automobiles.
The American public will point their fingers at the politicians and say it is their fault, when in reality it is our own fault.
BTW, interesting article.

I remember about 2 or 3 years ago diesel was about 30-40 cents cheaper. My grandpa was lookin' to buy a truck and was gonna get one that took diesel but decided to get one he could add some kickass hydraulics to the bed for.

diesels engines are more complex therefor cost more $$$ they make more power and generally get better mileage. i have an f-250 that weighs 9,900lbs but has a v-10 gas engine so i only get 8.0 mpg. the same truck, equipped with the 6.0 turbo diesel v-8 engine can get upwards of 20 mpg's.(which is why i'm trading mine in for one :cool. and diesel does cost less because it's a less refined fuel than gasoline but i believe the taxation is higher on diesel vs. gas making it higher in price.

When I first got to Germany I needed a car and I was looking at this little pink diesel fiesta, lol. It was ugly as sin but it would have gotten great mileage. I couldn't get the guy to drop the price from 2000 euros to 2000 dollars though, so I ended up not buying it...
diesels are like enegizer bunnies.......they keep going and going and....well they last forever, probably 5 times more than a gas engine, and you can get them to run on recycled vegetable oil that most restaurants will pay to get rid of.
pink huh, now you know you were in europe, not too many pink fiestas floating around here in the states.

Ford is releasing a small diesel car that gets 60MPG, but only in Europe. The reason, Americans on a whole do not buy diesel cars.
The diesel fuel costs about 2/3s that of unleaded to refine, so as already mentioned it should be a good deal cheaper, but we all know thats not the case.
