The September issue of OXM has a nice 4 page article detailing the changes of the 360 S model (aka "Slim"), including comparisons of its Valhalla chip with the Xenon and Jasper.

Xenon | Jasper| Valhalla
1.79A | 1.14A | 0.88A = power idle
1.43A | 0.97A | 0.73A = playing a DVD
2.17A | 1.34A | 1.14A = Grand Theft Auto IV**
1.93A | 1.24A | 1.01A = Left 4 Dead**

111 | 89 | 77 = temperature* idle
104 | 92 | 79 = playing a DVD
113 | 102 | 83 = GTA 4**
114 | 100 | 85 = L4D**

*these are all in degrees Farenheit.
**the games were not installed for these tests

So as you can see, the 360 S uses about half the power of launch model consoles, and also runs much cooler.

This is because the Valhalla combines the CPU and GPU onto a single 45nm chip versus the Xenon that had seperate 90nm chips and the Jasper that had seperate 65nm's.

Inside, the 360 S is also laid out much more efficiently, and a single fan draws in air from multiple ports and expels it through the large array of slots on the top (or side if you have the console vertical) which keeps the unit very cool inside and also much quieter than earlier models.

Installing games to your HDD will probably lower power consumption and temperature even more as the console doesn't have to spin the disc and there would be a little less heat build up.

Quote by Durtie:

This can't be right. My girlfriend and me game on seperate tvs but right beside each other. We have two copies of RDR. We can put it in at the same time, play for an hour. My xbox 360 is mildly warm but cool to the touch. Here xbox feels fucking HOT! I put a metal ballpoint pen 1 inch away from the console. The xbox made the pen a hell of alot harder than my old xbox 360. I love the slim, but touch it, its fucking hot. Maybe these temps refer to something else, but from a side to side comparison. The old xbox 360 feels cooler.

You are exactly correct, and there is a reason for this.

The 360 S is much more efficient at pulling cool air in and pushing hot air out.

The numbers above are all taken from inside the console, probably very close to the CPU.

If you tested the temperature directly outside the 360 S exhaust, the numbers would be a good deal higher:

109 idle, 112 DVD, 122 GTA4 and 115 L4D.

I'll be completely honest Meta
I've had my 360 S since they first started being sold
And that console does run way more smoothly then the old one
I've compared it to my friend's
And we did something similar to durtie's idea
His xbox was extremely hot after about 2 hours
Mine took atleast 6 before I could tell that it had gotten warm
