1080p on Xbox 360 Elite w/HDMI

I've always used my older Xbox 360 on 1080p with the component cables. Just got an Elite yesterday, hooked it through the provided HDMI cable and when I go into settings the 1080p option is grayed out, I can't select it. Highest I can go is 1080i.
Anyone know why this is?

Not sure, when I play on my 100" projector screen 1080p works fine

Odd....because I used the previous one on 1080p with just component cables.

I'd assume that was the issue if I hadn't already run my PS3 and Xbox 360 (component cables) at 1080p before.

ur problem could be ur tv. my tv only goes to 1080i buti can have it say it is in 1080p with comonent but there is no difference in pic. but with hdmi on my ps3 it wont let me. im assuming it is bc of the tech with hdmi and the fact that component cables are uncapable of producing a true 1080p pic. the only way for true 1080p is with hdmi.

your tv is only 1080i compatible.
with hdmi, you are getting a more digital signal between the 360 and tv and now the system can now determine what you tv's most optimal viewing resolution is.

Definitely. Component cables pass an analog signal, by their very nature; HDMI is a digital signal. Your TV isn't 1080P capable; what make/model is it?

Yeah, went and found the manual online...1080i, it's all good, image is still crisp.

This all makes sense, but there is a rear projection tv in this house that is 768p native I believe, and with component cables the 1080p is greyed out.
Could this be the tv somehow telling the Xbox it can't do 1080p?

1080p is possible via component. My Sony KDL-52XBR2 is 1080p and accepts 1080p via Component, VGA and HDMI.
1080p is a valid selection from the dashboard while using component.
Also, HDMI is bi-directional, which is why it will gray out, and preselect options for you, based on your destination device.
Why 1080p was working via component, I have no idea, you should have gotten no picture at all, and an error message on you TV.
And don't think of the salesperson as having lied, but more of having been clueless.
