also most of these films are avalable on xbox video (formally zune) for around 360msp (after they are out of the theaters). -X
The Gray, i was hesitant to watch this one ,not because i didn't think i would like it just one of those films i passed over quite a bit till now.
simple story,a group of oil rig workers take a flight to their next job and the plane goes down deep in Alaska's desolate wilderness.
the setting for the film was as the title suggests gray,no buildings,no people and after about 15 mins you get the feeling that things are indeed hopeless for the survivors who now have to fight for their life's.
the other big element besides the weather were the wolves, they are always lurking around the corner, the film did a great job of not forcing them down your throat every 2 mins, instead the focus remains on surviving one of the worlds most dangerous wilderness completely unprepared.
Neeson was good,IMO not his best role but still good enough to keep you watching. The supporting cast doesn't really shine as much as they could have since you are offered very little in the way of back story or anything that remotely makes you care if anything happens to them, there were moments but very few.
4/5,this one is definitely for the survivor genre fans out there,if your looking for a wilderness/survival movie this one should be on your list.

The devil inside, im a huge horror fan and this movie was just plain bad.
based on the real life story of a woman who was "possessed" in the mid 90's and confessed over a 911 call that she killed 3 people.
shortly after the 3 people were killed(in the first failed "exorcism") she is moved to the Vatican but is not officially declared "possessed".
the whole film is shot with a walking cameraman and a few "documentary" camera's that are there to record the "exorcism" as it happens.
the acting was sub par, the main characters were so-so and the supposed "possessed" actress was good even though her screen time was limited to 20 min's.
the story was supposed to be about the woman who killed the 3 people & was apparently "possessed"(or so i thought) but ended up being more about the other characters...where did the story go guy's?
the few good things about the film i liked were the actors that portrayed the "possessed" and the pure shock value that comes with any "possession" or"exorcism" movie (insane vocals, crazy face/body expressions & just about everything about the "possessed" victim)
2/5,overall the devil inside is not for most horror fans,i would recommend it if you like B movies or are not big on story's that make sense.

One missed call, i know it's a few years older but i had not seen it yet and the preview looked good.
the story is good, people start getting phone calls with messages that strangely are from themselves but dated a few days ahead of time.
i know it sounds like another cheap horror flick but this one has some creepy stuff packed in it, im not bothered or scared easy and this one had some unnerving shit.
3.75/5 the acting was good, nothing award winning but still worth watching.
Solid horror flick, if you liked fear dot com or final destination ,one missed call should be on your list of movies to watch, X 9-30-12
Hitman, just got done watching this one, kinda interested to see what they did with the ubisoft title in terms of story so i gave it a shot and surprisingly it was pretty good.
story wise the movie is simple to watch and follow, a hitman is tasked with killing the Russian president for one of his clients, (cutting the spoilers)shit happens & he becomes the target and has to figure out who hired him to kill the president and why he is now the one being hunted by the same organization that raised him to be a ruthless assassin.
the lead (Timothy Olyphant) was great in all the action scenes but it just felt like he was restricted because of the "hitman's" mindset/actions,having seen him before on film it just felt like all of his acting talent was white washed out of the film.
3.25/5 , hardcore fans of the video game series may not like this one but if you like action films and aren't a fan boy then you should have no problem liking Hitman especially if you tend to like action films shot overseas. X 10-3-12
Cabin in the woods, watched this one last night half expecting to see yet another run of the mill stab & scream flick.
The title of the film is VERY misleading if your expecting a simple slasher/horror flick, i can't tell you too much cuz i don't want to ruin the twists but all i can say is as always Joss Whedon does not disappoint, great story with an insane plot twist, the actors were great and the effect are amazing.
4/5, insane plot twist that covers massive territory and delivers a great what if punch line, recommended for fans of supernatural or conspiracy film.

Abe lincolin the vampire hunter, rented this one last night from the xbox video service, i had a few expectations going in to the film but nothing high enoough to tear down the whole film if they didn't meet them.
i guess the first thing you should know if you havn't seen the movie yet is the film is not a typical fang fest, it's story is about one of historys most beloved and important figures, the vampire angle works it way in when his mother is killed by a man his father owes money to and he witnesses the creature in the act.
The young adult portion of the film was really enjoyable to watch as he struggles to become a hunter and the man we all know today, the issues in the film that were part of his life were present, slaves, war and his time in office.
the acting was very good, the supporting cast was great, the movie does feel a little slow in some areas but the action and acting were enought to carry it through the parts that dragged.
effects were top notch, the burton style was apparent, from the first vampire transformation to the almost trademark pale gray look you can spot in most of his live action films, the score was good ,it provided drama and a few jumps here & there, visual wise the film very easy to watch, i hate to simply say it's a burton film but i cant really describe it any other way, everything you love or hate about his films is surrounding abe's story.
4.5/5,overall abe lincoln the vampire hunter was a great watch, im a huge horror fan as you guys may know and i like burtons work but his films are not what i would got to if i wanted a scare or intense gory, personal prefrance aside this one's worth a rent or buy if your a fang fan, i would reccomned this to the burton fans and of course fans of the vampire lore.

Prometheus, another rent from the xbl video service, i have to admit going into the film i knew little to nothing about it, this did help A LOT since it is apparently a tie-in to the alien series in the form of a prequel.
the story is pretty simple, a dozen or so people on bord the ship "prometheus" set out to find the origin of a "invitation" which according to the geoligest on board came in the form of many different digs culmanating in the same symbol through out many different cultures in history that couldn't have had contact with eachother,so by defalut it's apparently an invite from some long lost "engenieer" speices that they think created the human race. so to sum it all up the whole premiss of the trip is to find the supposed beings that created the human race.
if your expecting a full on alien film or a story heavy with the alien lore then your going to be let down/dissapointed by it, the film did tell the origin in a more non shalant way, and had scenes that were obvious nods to the alien series, like the giant "u" shaped ship they used in the first alien film that had all the alien eggs on it, by the time you see this ship towards the end of the film the picture should be pretty clear as to where the aliens fit into this movie and series.
acting wise the movie is solid, not an all star cast but still good enough to keep you intrested in what's happening to the characters.
the visuals are amazing, the score to the film was great, special effects were what the first alien film would have been like if made today with the 130 million budget they shot with (they were amazing)
4/5, taken as a stand alone film prometheus is a great sci-fi movie. if your expecting a overly detailed blunt explanation of the alien story then your probably going to get a little irratated/impatient but all in all i think you will walk away somewhat satisfied that you know where/how it began even if it still leaves a lot of your alien origin questions unanswered.

VHS, another first person camra horror flick, personally i don't hate fpc horror films, i just feel like im missing the majority of the action/scene while the camra shakes around giving the "feeling of real terror" or to show the first hand account rather than focus on the acting and story.
ahh now that i bitched about how fpc films make me feel i guess i get on with this one, vhs is about a group of 6 guys that are usually up to no good, their camera habits (which is how they get paid) include running up to women in public and pulling her shirt up to expose the boobs (which they catch on their handheld camera), vandalising empty houses and just being plain douchebags. getting paid for these actions by selling their videos is what keeps them going untill their friend lets them in on his "deal", an agreement with his source to find 1 vhs tape and return it to him, sounds simple until they arive and find dozens of tapes now having to watch all of them to get to the tape they are after.
the story in vhs is simple, each story has a diffent angle/twist but most of them all have supernatural themes in them.
i love the idea of slpiting the film into 5 tales that connect to the main story, it's something i enjoy quite a bit in other films/tv, you almost feel like your watching a bunch of tales from the cript/darkside episodes instead of one long fpc movie.
the acting was so so, the visuals were meh with the exception of a few parts in each story and the film didn't have a rel score/soundtrack.
2.75/5, not the best fpc horror film every made but it does have a ton of gory and may jump you a few times, i would reccomend this to anyone that likes either first ferson camera horror or movies that have a bunch of short storys in them.

the amazing spider man
finally rented this one last night from the marketplace and i have to say for a non rami spider man flick it was pretty good.
the movie is a prequel of peter's life before he becomes spider man, he does turn into the web head in the film but this one focuses more on the tale of his young adult hood and fills in the blank spots about his parents, aunt & uncle and his first love gwen.
the story is really full of emotional situations, from the major blow wih the uncle (some people may not know about it so i won't spoil it) to peter's struggle with the new found powers and young adulthood, i felt like they traded a lot of the classic spider man facts and well known lines for a more realistic feel towards the film, like his uncle never gave him the classic "with great power.." talk which was in almost every spidey origin since he was created.
the acting talent was top notch, lead as spidey was for the most part really convincing, he showed emotion when it called for it and had the young adult thing down, the other leads were great as well, the "lizard" had a really fresh look and the actor played the part very well, i really liked the scenes he had with peter that involved him as a man, gwen's part was nailed, the teenager with a huge crysis of a new found love (that just happens to be the spider man) and her hectic school/work life, she made me really belive she was gwen, support was top notch, leary as the lead police sgt was great, the aunt/uncle combo of field & sheen were close to perfect.
i feel like im wasting space by even commenting on the effects and score since they are both pretty much dead on, for the budget you pretty much get the point.
4/5while i enjoyed the move a lot and it is a great retelling of the epic story of one of my all time top marvel hero's i just felt there could have been more, maybe im just to picky/greedy as a marvel fan but i just have my views that i wont post since their just nitpickings from a huge marvel fan-boy.
epic superhero film that if your a fan of the marvel series you should own and if your a fan of big budget action films you should rent. 12-28-12
the revenent, thought this review was saved a while ago but apparently not,so here it goes again.
saw a trailer for this one a month back and it looked badass, a guy fighting for the us overseas is killed in action, upon returning to american soil and a funeral service being held his body just up and re-animates, confused and full of questions he drags himself back to his buddy's apartment to find out what the hell in going on,long story short he finds out he's basiclly the modern day version of a vampire, with no real life left to live he and his slacker friend go on a vigilanty crusade taking down all the local drug dealers and in genral bad guys they come accross.the acting is good, not a lot of emotional moving moments in it so don't expect oscar preformances, the effects were pretty good, some of the effects were suprising for the way the film led up to the, almost like they were hiding them or waiting for the right scene to use them, either way they were good.
the music was barely noticable if there was even any at all it didn't factor into my opinion of the movie.
3/5 overall a good horror/action flick, worth a rent if your into dark films that have gore and gunfights, also the loosely based vampire thing too but not so much if your a traditional vampire fan.

Iron sky
this story has to be one of the most original if not the most original ideas put into a film.after the world war ended and hitler's army fell a large number of the nazi followers feld...to the dark side of the moon!! building a massive war machne and training their army's under hitler's agenda (while he himself was long dead) they prepared for the final war on earth, a war to "clense all the sub-human's" from existance.40 years later a couple of U.S. astronauts find this massive natzi moon base, fearing an invation is upon them the natzi's start their plans for total takeover.
just seeing the trailer for this one i knew it was going to be good, the whole idea that the natzi's escaped to the moon after the war and secretly plan revenge on the US is insane, acting wise the film is good, the lead roles are solid, the guy playing washington is funny as hell, the lead natzi is really convincing and the rest of the cast seems almost spoof like to be taken seriously (they had good preformances but the parts just seemd so nutty i found it had to take some of them seriously). the effect are amazing, not avatar or T2 great but for the budget and genre (action/comedy) it was great, seeing the natzi symbol in the form of a moon base was epic and not something i think ill ever see again.
the score was good,it felt like they made a good attempt at putting a score that gave you some sort of emotion to go along with what was happening,it was good.
3.75/5 a fun story that really gets the "what if" part right, rent this one if you enjoy sci-fi flicks or really really out there films that tip the weird scale.
